Thanked: 0Pastes and vintage strop
Hi,
Just into shaving with a str8 razor, and have purchased a vintage strop that is in great condition. Question is " can a paste be used with a vintage strop"?

Thanked: 13245Yes -BUT- you "should" use two different strops if yer going to use paste...
Paste is normally a touch up, and plain leather is usually every shave, but that isn't written in stone...

Not written in stone but a good rule of thumb to live by till you have more time and experience in.
Pastes are very good options and you can go nuts with how many different ones there are and all their different uses. Better to leave your every day strop alone for the time being and go buy some cheap basla wood, most craft stores will carry it, to use paste on or an old leather belt that is in a natural state, not treated with anything.

+1. You should have 1 strop for daily use, no pastes...virgin leather if you will.
And if it's a Vintage Strop, you may want to leave it as is...Get yourself a paddle, or another cheap strop if you wish to use pastes...
You can make a cheap flatbead hone with a piece of wood, 3x12, and get some leather at local place, like Tandy....Just one idea....We have assumed control !
