Deer Hide Tanning
Something I've always wanted to try was tanning a deer hide. Since i'm into straights, now I'm wondering how well deer would work for a strop. Have any of you ever tried it?

I've had strops made from both deer and elk and they work the same as all other strops.

I've tanned a few hides (both kids and about 6 deer) but never thought about using it for a strop. Guess I'll have to pull out some of the left-overs and give it a try. It's brain-tanned, not commercially tanned, so that makes it a little different. There's a definate fleash side versus meat side.
You've got me thinkin' that's fer sure.

Thanked: 4942Nice!
Definitely allow for some stretching with the deer hides when using for strops.
Have fun,

I would recommend cutting it across the grain to help reduce the amount of stretching
