Thanked: 983Mate, if my export permits were still valid I would send you some to try out. It could only be an improvement on stropping on a cow or worse...horses arse!
Because of the fine grained nature of 'roo hide it is, I feel, some of the best leather for strops. Many people are put off by just how thin it is, even though it is also the strongest leather of all. For a paddle strop I think it would work really well. Maybe with the addition of a very thin layer of cushioning, a layer of Balsa perhaps...Maybe it wouldn't need a thing. I've never used a paddle strop to know how they work best.
I reckon Legion would know best, how 'roo hide works on a paddle. I think he has done some experimenting in this area. You could drop him a PM.

Thanked: 983They frown on it with big fines for those they deem stupid enough to make a habit of it.

First a great thanks to Burt for his work and help; seeing what he's done encouraged me to try why not to make something by myself too. I'm not much of a handyman and really don't usually do stuff like this.
So there is my own-made paddle strop and I humbly don't even try to compare it with the job Burt has done, we're clearly not competing in the same category
I couldn't find magnetic sheet nor balsa wood in my neighbourhood, so I had to settle for something else.
Luckily I found these very cheap and already paddle-shapped 'gratters' - or what I think are gratters though I wouldn't use them as such - on the local market.
I removed the metal part and glued them together. There was still a big hole, so I had to cover the one side I wanted to put the leather on with a piece of wood I sawed.
I finished it with spreading chromium oxide pasteon the leather.
It does a great job. I tried honing a gold dollar on a chinese 12k for a couple of hours, stropping on my custom made paddle, canvas and then stropping on leather and I got it passed the HHT!

Excellent work Francois, that was really resourceful of you to spot it as paddle making materials!
Who would have ever thought you could use a cheese grater to make a paddle strop... Now you can tell people you sharpen your razor on a cheese grater, and see the expression on their faces. LOL
Now you have a great paddle strop with Cro2, and you really are going to get a lot of good hours of finishing your edges on that paddle.
Well done man!
