Thanked: 375Paddle strop repair?
I have a Torrey paddle strop I picked up in an antique shop earlier this year. I want to restore it, replacing the leather seems to be the hard part. Anyone have experience with this? Where can I if it exist find the leather for a paddle strop?

Thanked: 443You're in luck; there was just a thread about restoring a paddle strop a few days ago. Depending on the size of yours, you might be able to buy a piece of replacement leather from Straight Razor Designs and trim it to fit. Fabric shops often have leather, but it's likely plasticized on the surface; you want something less treated. Other folks may have better suggestions, or there might have been something in the other thread.
Good luck with it."These aren't the droids you're looking for." "These aren't the droids we're looking for." "He can go about his business." "You can go about your business."

Your local old fashioned Shoe Repair Shop. They should be able to help at a reasonable price.

Thanked: 375Thanks for the feed back! I was looking at one of my old pants belts and the width is about the same as the strop, and it occurred to me after posting that this might work as a replacement. Also, I work in a Hydro electric plant and we use split leather around the turbine shaft to drive an oil pump for the thrust bearing (sometimes they break) When this happens we use a metal binder, they are squeezed to bite into the leather(don't know the real name) on each end of the leather to create a connection and it's just pinned (like a hinge). I forgot to mention this is a mechanical paddle strop.

All good ideas. I've done several. Tandy leather sells "belt leather" it's cowhide and great for paddles. Sometimes they have local stores in your area. Check this link:
Tandy Leather Factory - Natural Cowhide Leather Strips
I've found the guys at my local store very helpful.
Online it comes in 50" lengths and 3" wide. If you have a store nearby, you can find nice size pieces in their scrap bin. I've made quite a few paddles for pasting with their leather.
They have all kinds from Cowhide to Kangaroo....
Good Luck.We have assumed control !

Do you mean that it is a loom strop or a combination strop? Pics might help.
As to where to get leather Tandy is a good source for a bunch of different types. If you live close enough to one you might be able to go in and get a good deal on scrap pieces. If not ordering on line is not to expensive.
