Thanked: 2Dubl Duck strop
I know that DD is a premier razor compny but know little to nothing of their strops. thats the beauty of a forumn. In the DD line of strops is this on the higher or lower end? It works well so it is good in my eyes, but back in the day was it just decent or something better?
markings: Dubl Duck
Satinedge
inported shell
pearlduck scientifically treated etc... this is standard on all of their strops.
it is also attached to a firehose material (linen) I have never had to use linen before is it decent?
Thanks, you all help!

Thanked: 369AFAIK, the Dubl Duck strops were actually manufactured by the Illinois Razor Strop Company (AKA - Fromm) and re-branded.

I have one of those and it is a darn good strop. I'm a linen/leather stropper so I praise the linen on the old vintage strops. Barbers I knew 25 and 30 years ago, that were old men then, who'd been doing it 40 and 50 years, used dubl duck, Certifyd Red Imp, Koken, among others. That was a pro barber strop you have there. Shell, part of a muscle in a horse's buttock, is some of the best stropping material known to man.

Glad to hear that. I hadn't heard who made them but dubl duck didn't make anything AFAIK. Everything, razors, strops, whatever, was contracted out to various mfgs by Bresnick and then Pearlman. AFAIK . I suspect that Puma may have made at least some of the duck razors. I've got a few Bresnick marked Pumas and they are very similar in design and construction to others marked dubl duck ....

The linen is an interesting part of the equation. Some don't think it is worth using and others, like me, wouldn't think of being without it. The 1961 barber manual PDF excerpt on stropping and honing, in the SRP library shaving related help files here , mentions that there was controversy on the effectiveness/usefulness of linen amongst barbers back then.
I found that to be very interesting. Keith DeGrau, who made the well known HandAmerican strops made them with two leather components and no linen. He felt that was a better combo with a smooth leather along with one fashioned with a different texture. So it is a matter of trying it and deciding which side of the fence you're on.

Thanked: 369I think if you check the Dubl Duck trademark you'll find that the Pearlman brothers owned the company.
