Check the MSDS I linked to, the specify it as;
"Synonym: Chromium Oxide greens; Chromium Oxide
Green Powder; Chromium Sesquioxide; Green Chromium
(III) Oxide powder; C.I. Pigment Gren 17; C.I. Number
77288; Dichromium trioxide
Chemical Name: Chromium Oxide
Chemical Formula: Cr2O3"
So it's our green stuff, I have unknowingly mixed it with lots of things without any harm done, but not anymore.
Everyone knows that the pure knowledge of what can go wrong will jinx it and make sure it will happen, ignorance is bliss!
Guess it's like linseed oil and rags, a bad way to make a fire but leave in you garage and VOFF!Hur Svenska stålet biter kom låt oss pröfva på.

Sorry about jinxing you all, maybe the mods can put a jinx-warning on this tread!

Thanked: 3164Well that looks pretty conclusive, Lemur - thanks.
Can't say I have ever heard of an explosion being caused in that fashion, nor can I find anything on the net about an actual explosion. All I know is that it is used with glycerin in soap, as the colouring in facemasks that use glycerin, in ladies mascara and eye products that also contain glycerin, in paints that also contain glycerin, and that artists add glycerin and gum water to it in order to get some shininess in water colours, and Keith Of Hand-American's liquid chrome oxide contains glycerin (along with detergent and lanolin) - so I'll shake the bottle a bit gingerly next time I use it! Incidentally, I don't strop on Keiths product - I apply it to a mop for polishing, where it spins with 1,750 revolutions per minute. Not one explosion in five years of use.......
Regards,
Neil

I have never heard of this before, came by the MSDS by accident.
Since it seems to be a real danger, how small it might be I don't know, but maybe put some warning up about it.
I'd hate to see a fellow straight razor shaver go up in smoke coarse he didn't know.Hur Svenska stålet biter kom låt oss pröfva på.

Now that you're jinxed, mix some Crox - Glycerol and leave on the table while you go to sleep, doesn't sound so safe now does it!
An empirical test would be to ask a friend to mix the same without telling him of this, who would be up in smoke first?
Edit; especially if your stropping a razor with celluloid scales, that's also an explosive!Last edited by Lemur; 04-09-2013 at 05:58 PM.

Thanked: 12Hey All, here's my 2 cents. I make a finishing paste that works well for me, but if you try it make sure you cover the strop evenly with the powder. I have an old canvas strop that I have used for years and it has gotten kind of smooth, but still has that "canvas" wooshing sound when stropped. I lightly, very lightly, rub a small amount of tallow, or any cheap non abrasive strop cream evenly across the strop. Then I take the chalk that rock climbers use. It is very fine and very consistent. I very carefully sprinkle the chalk on the lightly pasted strop so that when lightly rubbed in, it covers evenly. If you just plop it in a small pile it is very difficult to evenly spread. You can get the chalk at a store called REI.

Cheers for all the posts. V glad to know i won't blow myself or shed up. Mrs already doesn't understand all my strop, paddle and paste making and if i cause damage I'll never hear the end of it. Now I know its safe I'll give these suggestions a shot and see if I can get something to work.
