Thread: .1 cbn spray and nanocloth

Hello, i just ordered some .1 micron cbn spray and a piece of nanocloth. Any advice or feedback, good bad or indifferent. Thanks

I tried to link them for you, but am working on a Win 8 laptop with a touch pad. There are not many thing I hate... but Win 8 is one of them.

I got the win 8 Lenovo convertible. Win 8 takes a lot of getting used to I admit. I will try to get those up. My understanding is that cbn has rounded particles like crox but the finish is supposed to be very good. I cant seem to tell the difference from .25 diamond slurry on felt, .25 diamond spray on felt and .5 crox on linen or balsa. I did notice .25 spray on balsa though. I should be getting it today and will give it a whirl.

In my opinion CBN is much more comfortable than Poly Diamond. With Nano paste/sprays, a progression really pays dividends in edge comfort and durability.

I recommend a .5 paste, diamond or Chrome Ox then .25 Diamond, CBN or Cerium Oxide, then .125 CBN and finish on 0.10 CBN. I can feel the difference between .125 and .010 CBN.

You can strop this edge on .010 CBN daily and indefinitely. Shave off the .010, very smooth very comfortable. Stropping CBN wet, a light mist, is the best way to get all it’s got to give.

All this is after a well-honed edge finishing on a 12k Naniwa then natural finisher, an old Black or Translucent, or Thüringen/Escher.

I use dmt 1200 for bevel, Norton 4/8 then 1 micron film on surface plate , then .3 micron film, then .5 crox on linen. I have used .25 dia slurry on felt, .25 dia spray on felt hanger, and .25 dia spray on balsa. The only one that feels different is the balsa. The other three feel the same. My shaves are great, the blades are very sharp IMO, I'm just trying not to leave something out. I just got it today and have a blade finished on the .3 micron that I haven't shaved with yet. Will let you know tomorow.

All I’m saying is CBN is not magic. Any paste or spray is only as good as the edge it is trying to improve.

You should be able to get a good shave straight off the 8k. Pasteing on Chrome Ox will make it smoother and the finer the grit or spray after that, should continue to improve comfort even more.

Sounds like you have a good foundation.

All the .25 diamonds should produce similar results, they are all the same size. With Balsa you are getting to the point to where the grit naturally in the wood is larger than the spray/grit you are using as abrasive, which is why it feels different.

This is where I go to other non-traditional materials, leather and balsa have too much grit naturally, and Nylon, paper, cloth and foam are good clean, uniform substrates for Nano sprays.

And you need to be able to mist/wet it, for CBN.

I orderd one last year,did not work for me.

And that I think is a very common result. Like Bill, at best the razor was finished on a 12-15k stone, then maybe some .5 chrome ox (30K) then to .010 CBN (160K), a 130k grit jump.

Not surprising the results is not as expected. If you honed on a 1k then jumped to a 12k the results would probably be similar.

With Nano grit CBN you need a Progression, the grit size jumps are huge. The other is the amount of laps, remember we are polishing not honing, I do minimum of 50 laps and at time 100 on each grit.

I think all these pastes and sprays may have a place in what we attempt to do with our edges (MAY HAVE)
But after 4 yrs teaching myself how to hone my razors (am getting better what place the may have eludes me still.
They are not magic potions by any stretch,JMO

I will try the 50 laps on the cbn tomorrow. The nano cloth is mounted on glass. I just sprayed it up, My CBN is .1 micron not .01. I'm not sure what the grit is for that. I'm gonna treat it like dia spray, easy no pressure.
