Pattern welded steel has no metallurgical advantage over modern homogeneous steels and in fact there are several points in the process of making it in witch one could ruin the steel. It is a display of skill and aesthetics nothing more. True Damascus steel or Woots is a different matter all together but the advantages it gives are of little consequence to a razor

Borax is used as a flux to forge weld the layers of steel that make the lines/patterns in the damascus blade.

I did not notice there was a thread in our beloved SRP dedicated to Mastro Livi videos. I found it out while I was browsing this section, like I usually do whenever I can and have time with the other sections of the forum as well.
I would like to contribute to this thread by posting two videos I filmed about Mastro Livi and his art. I hope you all gentlemen will appreciate it.

In this video you can see Mastro Livi making his Carbon Damascus steel and from it making four blades and a kamisori. The video was filmed the day Mastro Livi made the kamisori I ordered to him and, of course, it is the kamisori made in this video. Mastro Livi was very kind to let me watch him at work and to film the whole process.

In this video you can see Mastro Livi making the latest straight razor I ordered to him. I asked to him if we could make this video in a way other straight razor lovers could understand a little bit of his art and to explain what he was doing. The result is a sort of documentary in which you can see the great Mastro Livi at work and the making of a straight razor in all of its parts.

I truly hope you gentlemen will like these video and I hope my videos will contribute - at least a little - to spread the art of straight razors shaving of which, of course and like you all, I am passionate about.

    Gentlemen,
I published a new video about Mastro Livi art. In this video you will watch Mastro Livi making two beautiful billets of carbon damascus steel in two different patterns. With one of them he will then make a gorgeous straight razor for our SRP member stefanosup, also featured in this video as well as being the lucky owner of this magnificent masterpiece.
I hope you all will enjoy the video.

Default Mastro Livi: San Mai Damascus Straight Razor

    Gentlemen,
you should know our friend stefanosup did it again! Last week he came to Perugia and ordered a new razor for his collection (I guess he is now the main Mastro Livi collector in the world!) and that was a good chance for me to shoot a new video about Mastro Livi making a San Mai damascus for this razor.
I hope you will enjoy Mastro Livi expressing his art and talent!

This is the video about the repairing of a straight razor done by Mastro Livi and his son Luca. The razor in this video has been then bought by me and became the ninth Mastro Livi razor in my collection.
I hope you will all enjoy this video: I believe it is interesting to see and know more about Mastro Livi and what he does in his workshop.
