Glen, thanks for sharing this video. A couple of things that really stood out for me. First, this is the simplest video for learning how to hone a kamisori without getting into the complications of the Ura and Omote and which is which. Also, I really like and understand the concept of reducing your ratios from 7:1 to 5:1 to 3:1 with decreasing pressure, reducing the likelihood of screwing up the blade symmetry or asymmetry as some may like to put it.

But I do have a question for you. Have your tried using a coticule with water rather than J-nats to further refine the edge after you are done with the slurry? If yes, do you think the results are comparable to the J-nats?

Please make this video a sticky in the razor honing section, if you haven't already.

I specifically stayed away from using the Japanese terms LOL after almost 40 years of teaching Japanese styles of Martial Arts I am well versed in what we fondly call "Dojo Japanese" and how far those meanings can really vary from spoken Japanese

I tried quite a few stones for final polishing on Kamisori but honestly you really have to be up there to get the right feel on these... They should be so sharp that you are literally almost gliding above the skin level when shaving... Nothing against the Coticule, I use mine a ton on Sheffield steel when they come in, and get good feedback on the edges, but I don't feel it is high enough for these razors. You might note in the vid that I actually dilute out to clear water on this, then take it up from there... I would put the Shapton 16k and 30k in the running and perhaps the Naniwa 12k I haven't tried an Escher on them or a CF -yet- ...
I actually like the Coticule as the building block stone, just like I used it in the video because mine doesn't cut deep into the steel and leaves a nice haze finish to lead into my Nakayama...
To each their own, but honestly if you are shaving these razors like their western counterparts then IMHO they are not near sharp enough and you are kinda missing the real experience of a Kamisori...

No biggy as they are I guess rather rare, but they are made... I still don't know about the stamps though....

Edit: I should mention that there are actually "Left handed" Kamisori's out there, but I believe that the Stamps are also reversed on them, so the rule about "stamps up", for most of the honing still should apply.. BUT I have never even seen one in the flesh so that is just a WAG, I have only seen pics of them on a Japanese Knife website...

This might have been answered previously, or you might have said it on the video and I didn't hear...
I watched your kamisori honing videos yesterday and I noticed that the single stroke that you do on the stamp/Ura-side is always(?) spine-leading rather than edge-leading. Is there any particular reason?
