    Default New belt sander find

I'm a happy bunny today, found this old cobbled up belt sander for sale yesterday and managed to snaffle it at a bargain, it's primitive but effective, the belt was goosed so I've ordered a few and i am awaiting delivery. It works great and I can move the drive belt over for a slower speed if necessary. I've bolted a guide bar across to help me with flat grinding. I'm hoping it will make life a little easier with stock removal and scale making. Here's a few pics, apologies for the messy workshop. Name: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1377430613.160051.jpg

It's 16.5cm wide, I can use 150 x 1090mm belts on it which is good because they are widely available here in the uk.

Looks like you could do 2 razors at a time. 1 in each hand. That's a wide belt.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

don't need to apologize for that, it looks great compared to mine, I thought that's how they're supposed to be. Looks like a great find, some of the best tools are home-made.

I could see my self grinding on that. Maybe some cone pulleys or a couple different size pulleys and belts. One to go fast and one to go slow. Maybe wrap some tape around the non-driven wheel and use it as a contact wheel. Grinding on a plain steel wheel without any cushioning in a pain. Maybe some graphite impregnated canvas on the flat platen.

My grinder has a lot speeds but most of the time it is either going flat out fast, or going slow as it can go. You can do a lot with just two speeds.

Where there is a will there is a way. I have done a bit of grinding on less than perfect machines.

Great advice and food for thought. I'm glad it's only a 2 speed, I'm a big fan of keeping things simple! The graphite canvas is a great idea. I think il give it a try. The front drum is a 4 inch, what would be the best sort of size razors to hollow grind on that if at all poss?
