Just what I was thinking!
Any idea of how to progress? The horn has been soaked in Neatsfoot oil so it's already 'in' the horn. Could the end of the scale be soaked in alcohol or something, then the 'glue' applied and then the scale be re-soaked in the Neatsfoot oil to refresh it?Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdin’s cave of 'stuff'.

I thought it was a practice run also. I was just wondering if the crack should appear on the 'Real Deal' after it had gone that far in restoration, what would the options be?

Thanked: 13234In that event with Horn I would try the idea of Alcohol perhaps even a tiny bit of Acetone, to clean away the Wax and the Oil.. At that point in time you really have nothing to lose, as the worst case senario is to build a new set of scales
When you get to the point of drastic measures is when you start really reaching

Thanked: 1184I was thinking denatured alcohol or acetone and blasting out the crack with compressed air . The air might blow some into the crack and back out giving it a wash.
May blow it to smitherines too !Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

I have filled bug bites on horn scales with CA glue after they had been soaking in neatsfoot for over a week,
I did just that cleaned with a bit of acetone & gave it a quick blow out with the compressor with the scales flat on the bench and let them dry overnight.
then I also mixed a little acetone into the small amount of thin CA glue left in a bottle I used for coating wood scales to make it really thin to try & get into the crevices, only did it last week odd & it seems to have held out so far after sanding & repolishing
the holes where shallow on the inside of the scaled, around the wedge pin in the photo below & along the top edge a couple about1/8 or so wide & deep about 1 third from each end you can just make out
the cracking is like lamination in the length of the horn regards D
