I know it needs honing but...
I just got this razor that belonged to my grandfather. It needs a good honing but what do the learned think of the existing hone wear?

That is a lot of hone wear and a bit uneven at that, especially on the show side. However, if you want to shave with it, perhaps for sentimental reasons, it could be saved. It'll need to be honed with several layers of tape to re-establish the proper bevel angle. If you are new to the game I'd suggest sending it to a pro. He'll figure it out and tell you what to do for subsequent touch-ups.
There's good steel in those Jos Allen's, it's just been loved too much. I have one that is a fine shaver. Good luck.

Agreed. It can be a good shaver and might be worth sending off to a pro for honing (they would know better than I).
Like mentioned above, that's going to be very difficult to hone for a beginner. I'd imagine it'll give a pro some challenges.
Worth a try IMO.
