UV protection for wooden scales
I'm using a very nice purple almost pinkish wood (hint: it smells like puke) this wood tends to get darker and browner due to UV exposure.. I use oil finishes on wood sofar (have used CA but not on scales)... so 2 questions arose:
- is there a commonly known/available UV protectant I could add to tung oil?
- how prone is CA finish to cracking due to flexing of scales.. I'm going with a 2,7 mm width (cca 0.04") and as far as I know CA is pretty non-flexible

Thanked: 170I've worked with Paduk, which is purple until it is exposed to UV. I used lacquer and let it go to brown. (dashboard on a hot rod). There are exterior finishes that have UV protection. I don't know if they would solve the problem for you, but it would be worth a shot, if you want to preserve the raw color. Let us know if you are successful, and what you used.

Optimum Opti-Lens Headlight Coating has the most UV protection I know of for a topical application. Should work out great. A little expensive AutoGeek sells it. Good news is it could be refreshed every 6 month to a year or so.

thanks for your answers guys,.. I think I heard that some lacquers have uv protection added, I'll check that,
does anyone have info about CA and:
- UV protection
- reduction in flexiness of wood (I might be wrong but if I think back all the scales finished w. CA are rather sturdy?)

Thanked: 2284Here's a link to some oil finishes. Check out the Exterior finish.

I use the marine teakwood finish on some of my shaving brush handles, and its great stuff. The Exterior finish has the UV protection in it your looking for. You could apply this and then your CA finish over top. That should stop any color change caused by UV light.Burls, Girls, and all things that Swirl....
