I took the deepest cracked set of scales and pinned them up today. No bleaching ot stains, these ones are o'naturel. Thought I thought they matched nicely with this old girl that has been on the board for some time.
Absolutely stunning. Love that all natural look. Its like a partial staining.
"Me Like"..!!
I might become a damn convert, or a byvert, to scale materials.
My wife calls me some other kind of vert, but I can't seem to remember. Something to do with the beginning, or before.
Oh. Yeah...that's it.
PreVert...I think.!
Well something like that, think I'll go see what she's doing. [emoji12]
What type of bone is it .?
RezDog those scales look great. Everytime you post your carved bone I'm more convinced that I need to try my hand at making some. What kind of tools and techniques are you using? Have you posted a tutorial thread? If not you should. Great work! Keep it up.
Thanks guys. I am uncertain of what type of bone it is. I want to tell you it is camel bone, but I am not certain. This set looked pretty good as is. One of the issue with bone is it often looks very splotchy if it is not bleached.
I went all the way when I bought my tools for carving bone. I started with a 5" engravers vice and a set of engraver chisels. The chisels are most often seen advertised as gravers. There are several different types of metal that they are made from. It was a bit of a learning curve trying to figure out how to sharpen them. I have a few tutorial threads I would like to try. This is one of them. All in good time though as I am still at the early stages of learning myself. Other people can do the carving with a dremel, I tried and it makes no sense to me. I have a ton of bone blanks in transit so there will be a lot more carving going on here. I have some done for my projects but not nearly enough. I was counting razors today and I have a lot of carving to. Do here. I think I am going to try carving some horn too. It is going to be tricky though. I think if a guy want to get good at it he needs to go hang out in India for a couple of months. Slowly learning a little more every time.
Looks awesome, Shaun! :beer1:
Handling and rubbing the bone in-hand will make them look nice and old in short-order, I think.
Well-done!
Dremels are hard to carve with, too hard IMO, on horn and bone and tend to run away so easily.
Hand carving, with time, tools, patience, and the artistic abilities of someone with talent, (not me in this medium), just exudes a classiest and style that is truly an art form.
Your work with these materials is in that realm Shaun, really.
That looks damn good buddy.
:tu
The bones scales look great Rez, fits the blade nicely, like they were born together.
Over an hour and 1/2 into cleaning my desk and I don't think I am half done.
I should maybe do this more often.....
My dear sweet wife refers to the room that I keep my razors and fishing stuff and hunting stuff and locksmith tools and related stuff in as the hoarders corner. The fact that it is crowded and disorganized is part of what keeps me from taking too many pictures.
I remember seeing a post of some closets that you made and I had the impression that you led a spartan lifestyle!:D
My wife has been on a cleaning/downsizing kick recently....
All of my stuff is really good and interesting! I have stopped for the day and my desk looks much better but the dining room table is full of stuff now.
Where do I put it? :hmmm:
How's them Bee's doing?
I honestly don't know at the moment.
I can only hope at this time. It is 15'F here at the moment and if I checked them it would do more harm than good.
That is the warmest it will be for the next week or so but from what I read that is not a bad thing. When it gets cold their metabolism slows down and they need less food. But then they can starve to death with food only a few inches away because their clump won't move there to eat it....
My wife made a honey cheese cake today for the girls card party. I hope there is a little left over!
Well my W&B special showed up Thursday instead of Saturday so that was nice, it is 5/8 but with a slight frown and a small ding near the heel which will be removed getting the slight smile back. Also the toe of the blade hits the wedge which is odd to me it is so, so close and just nips it when closing. I am gonna pop the pins on this one and clean it all up so I may see if re pinning will cure this or may need to take a hair off the wedge.
Been tough to find time to work on anything lately but I've been checking in here when I can to see what you guys are up to. Very nice work all around gents! The bog oak scales are looking good, the carved bone scales are amazing, the other razors and projects all coming together is really nice to see, especially since I'm not making much progress on my own projects at the moment.
Outback, that W&B with the ground off heel is the one I sent ya a while back, the one I posted in "The Butchered Blade" (post #4422) as I was wondering what to do with it. It looks awesome, I knew it went to the right guy. :tu
They are yellow I am guessing celluloid, they say Special with the arrow and cross on the one scale. I can not seem to find a pic at the moment I know I have one in the SOTD and a couple other places.
Before you unpin it, see if the pivot will slide back, it may have a big pivot hole and was fine, when pinned tight, but has moved forward when they loosened up.
If so, you can get a small thin file, tape the flats of the file and with the edge, file a bit off the edge of the wedge.
That's horn.
I have a Red Imp that was a gift. I would rescale it otherwise. The wedge is dang near the scale hole now after filing.
When my son inherits it he can deal with it! :D
,,,,,,,,,,and a stale candy cane. :D
Your so sensitive over that candy cane, because its the first one you ever had. You keep it close by to remember the days of Christmas past. :rofl2:
cleaned up and made scales for a jaques lecoultre frameback and a j. wostenholm & sons wedge today. didnt snap any pix of the wostenholm but heres two of the lecoultre.

That's a sweet LeCoultre! Nice closeup of the screw.

I managed to get a few blades pinned up today, plus a better shot of the one from yesterday.
Euclid I posted the wrong pics and could not figure out how to get rid of them the Special is a plastic wedge. I already un pinned it and got everything cleaned up. After re pinning it, things are where they should be the factory pin was bent something fierce so I believe that was the reason it was hitting. The file is a great idea though thanks for that :D
rezdog - do you make all those unique detailed scales yourself? what material is that?
