Dremel = Straight Razor Tool of Death
I noticed before I filtered my bay rum that there were tiny droplets of spice oils floating on the top of the liquid. I think when I filtered it through a folded paper towel that it took out the spice oils too. Maybe you guys can think of a better way to strain/filter the stuff and yet retain the oils.
Put your spices in s spice bag.
Its like a tea bag of sorts.
Brew, squeeze, throw away!!
I drained mine through a paper coffee filter and squeezed the remaining liquid out.
In cooking, aromatics are either bundled together or tied in a sachet of cheese cloth.
Yes a sachet of cheese cloth might work but there again it might retain the valuable oils.
I was wondering if a piece of aluminum foil could be punctured with very small needles to form a 'sieve' of sorts. However I can see very small particles passing through.
Anyway the journey continues.
4 large bay leaves.
1/4 teaspoon allspice. (3-5 berries)
1 stick of cinnamon.
Crack, not grind, the dry ingredients and wrap them in cheese cloth maybe? You wouldn't have to strain the liquid.
I wish I had known this a couple of days ago. Next batch I'll do that. Thanks Mike, Roy, and Panama.
Grinding the ingredients was my mistake, Roy. Mother Benz used this recipe and made it work.
When I get my bay oil, I will try the recipe again, this time without any cracking or grinding.
One of the comments when I was looking at the different suppliers of the Bay Oil was that they stored their mixture for Two Weeks so that all oils were released. Just what I read.
Yes, I read that too. Some other recipes I've seen suggested a period of 4-6 weeks. Maybe a longer steep would help.
Just got this beauty in the mail today. "JOSEPH ELLIOT'S AMERICAN HOLLOW GROUND ON A 1 INCH STONE". From the eBay pics I was thinking I'd do a full restoration, but it's in amazing shape with a nice patina. I'm gonna scrub it down, hit it with some steel wool and call it good. Some light rust between the scales and some small spots here and there, but nothing major. It came in the original box and I really don't think it's seen much daylight since it was made. The Bakelite scales don't have any oxidation or a single scratch on them. What I thought Was a good deal at $25 shipped turned out to be a steal. So I guess technically this is something that I'm working on, but only for about five minutes.Attachment 251982
That's a sweet looking razor, B.J.! I've always had a liking for Joseph Elliot razors. You scored on that one, nice patina and looks like very minimal hone wear.
@BeJay
Looks like a great razor. I love natural patina like that. Does the tang stamp say Joseph Elliots Best Silver Steel? I am currently working on a similar razor, well the same grind and brand at least. Mine has no blade etch.
I got the FleaBay bottle flushed out and the small clear bottles with the dripper in them arrived so I gave them both a go.

I decided to use the FleaBay bottle for my use here at home so I emptied the clear bottle and the remainder from the old batch into the new batch and sealed it back up under vacuum.
I did vary the recipe a bit as I bought some Everclear to use instead of the vodka. There was a noticeable difference as the new batch has a much more distinctive 'alcohol' smell to it. More like a commercial AS.
That looks great cudarunner. It is darker than mine, probably because of your vacuum process.
Hey Roy, that looks tasty.
Careful not to set that near a bottle of malt vinegar.
The shaker bottles were a damn good idea.
"Ever clear"!! , well at least if it don't work too well, you'll get something from drinking it, and its cut already too.😎
These have been on the project board for so long I was beginning to think they were welded to board.

Two of them feature my nemesis the satin finish. I just cannot manage to get it how I want it. I am getting a bucket of honing to do when I go back to work.
Man, each one of those look fantastic Rezdog! Great job!

Nice work my friend!
I"m SOOOOOOOO Glad that you are trying for the satin finish :tu There are some here who insist on over polishing razors that NEVER had that look from the factory. In my humble opinion they just make Bastard Razors out of them.
Again, Nice Work! :y
I'm not sure if it's from the vacuum sealing or not  My second batch is a lot lighter 'So Far', As I'd posted about how age etc can effect herbs and spices I decided to invest in an Very Inexpensive scale to weigh the leaves, cinnamon and Allspice to try to get some consistency.
I'm also going to 'play' with using the oil. However I'd prefer to use what your mother did. With that said, the proper bay leaves that I find are between $10 per ounce or $40 per 8 ounces (Plus Shipping). Perhaps Panama can share where he'd found them for $44 per lb.
Anyway here's the $10 scale showing how much a small Bay Laurel Leaf weighs:

You need Pimenta Racemosa. One sniff of the real deal and you will know that it's the signature scent in bay rum. Without Pimenta Racemosa, it's not Bay Rum!

My Mother is smiling down on you guys.:D
Roy there's this thing called eBay :p
I found it more convenient & economical to use the essential oil.
Pure Bay Essential Oil (Pimenta racemosa) 100% Natural Therapeutic Grade | eBay
Hey my good mate, I know all about FleaBay, just ask my PayPal Account!
I did order some of the oil, $9 delivered and I'll play with that but as I said I'd like to eventually see what I can do with Benz's Mother's recipe. Nothing like having an heirloom.

Which brings me to ask if you could share your recipe???? :w
Roy, you can share it with anyone if you like.
If you want to share, I would try some of that Bay Rum! A small sample!!
Oh..We are sharing the RECIPE!
Ooh boy, that was a loong time ago. I'm may be in one of the many existing bayrum threads but it was all just a bunch of adding this & that experimentation so no specific formula involved. 10 drops at a time was my rule so I didnt overdo anything.
What I can remember is Captain Morgans rum . A full bottle & some Absolut vodka maybe a half bottle ? A bunch of orange rinds, bay rum oil, clove oil, sandlewood oil, lime oil, Virginian cedarwood oil, Frankincense oil. I still have a little left after many years. I can also clearly remember the lovely Chilean lady at the essential oil supplier who packed my parcel... but I digress (sigh)
You guys are just getting drunk by osmosis, man!

Sometimes you just can't get the oxidation off of molded scales without compromising the design. I've been experimenting with a few different things to try to color the scales and so far this is been the best one. It's called Kiwi heal and edge and it's just a basic edge dressing for shoes. I put on a very thin coat and it came out glossy and dries very quickly. So far it seems like it's going to be a very durable finish. Sorry for the crappy pics.

I've ordered them in the past, but they were not cheap. It seems this plant likes tropical climates. I don't think it will grow where I live(I've looked into it). We need to talk some of or SRP brethren in the Florida area into planting a couple of trees. :beer1:
