I can verify that!!! While I didn't save it, Benz sent me a photo of him and a friend taken during the friend's last 'Gentleman's' Bird Hunt' and that rig was in the picture! :tu

Looks like the bulk of them went to Russia.
Yours is getting rarer, Benz!
Benz...AKA. JOHN RAMBO. :tu
Took multiple times to the heat and press, but I finally got Jerry's (gasman) scales flat

Now to play with some coloring agents and epoxy, for the repairs. The fun is about to begin.
Hard to believe you got those straight. Ha. Im blown away. Nice job Mike. Your the master 9f straightening horn! Well, imo anyway!
I can only give thanks to all the pioneer's before me. They blazed the trail, I just followed their path. And my trusty heat lamp, of course.
I finally found a set of scales to fit my 6/8 Green Lizard! They did make smaller ones.
Ask me how I know?

Nice find Tom. It sure is cool when you find the original stuff to put things back together. But i bet with a little time, you could hone that chip out of that other blade and sell it on ebay. Ha
It could be advertised as:
Vintage Blade in Great Shape with Custom Cutouts for shaving around moles, nose and other facial areas.

Just like soooo Many FleaBay Sellers would do! :rofl2:
Just more wind-chime fodder! :D
Sadly, Roy, I am pretty certain I am the only idiot doing that! :rofl2:
Ive saved up enough bad blades that i could almost make a wind chime but the wife said no. So i guess i need to send them off to you Tom. One day you will get a box from me. If you want them.
Might have enough to make one myself, now.
Wow, I had lots of catching up to do! It's been too long since I have had time to be in here. Great work/ projects all of you. My latest Tally Ho will be in the SOTD, no clean up just hone and go. No time for the clean up as of now.
I do have an idea I'll be trying for chipped or bug eaten scales, has anyone ever seen the acrylic used for finger nails? Wierd stuff, it's liquid acrylic then a powder you dip into. I'm thinking it would fill large areas nicely. Once I play with it I'll share results. Take care everyone I'll try and check back more often, keep it up.
Got one put together today. Not as glossy of a finish as I was looking for but I figured I'd better stop where I was at because these finishes are kicking my Back-side.
This is the Wade and Butcher that Vic reground for me. Matching Marado wedge with the Marado Scales. And with a little detail during the pinning, I was able to get it to center like a big dog! Thanks to Richard and Tom for the help and instructions. Brass pins and washers including the washers inside. And only one on each side. Finally!
I'll try and get it on the stones tonight and hope for a nice shave in the morning with it. Crossing my fingers. I'm happy with the way the wedge fit. Something I've been having issues with. Its a wedge in both directions and with the scales being 0.075" they have plenty of flex. Went for the Satin finish on the blade face just because I don't have one yet.

Looks good to me,Jerry. So did ya use your doming block, to make those collars.?
I have looked at it, daughter uses it sometimes.
I've been looking at a lot of different ideas as of lately.
I've got a set I'm working on, that are a real hoot to match.
But I've got one for coloring epoxy, I've tested a bunch of others, and they wouldn't set up properly. Its done with paint, or fingernail polish ( acrylic ). I'm going to use enamel ( gloss ). Earth pigments would be nice, but I couldn't find any locally.

And using my chewing tobacco, for staining where Jerry dug in with the file. Talk about multi colored, streaked horn.!!

No Jerry, I didn't spit in them.! :rofl2:
A little spit never hurt anything!
I tried a few washers on the block and think I need to order some different sizes. I needed something smaller to put under for filling the space under the smaller one I made but I wasn't able to make small enough filler washer to put underneath. So I dug up some solid washer I had bought a while back and used those. Got to do some more playing with the dapping block and order some more sizes of washers.
BTW, I thought about chucking up the tny washer on a micro bolt and giving it a spin in the drill and use a file but things just didn't work out very well. Mangled things and said the hell with it. Maybe another time and some bigger washers to make some domes.
Thats horrible Roy!
Well, I've abandoned the paint and epoxy, schlemiel. I couldn't get the colors to match right without it looking like a smashed thumb.
So I reflected on the KISS Theory ( Keep It Simple Stupid )
Hmm... gonna have to sand them scales a bit.. I'll use the dust n some CA.!! :gaah:
Used some other dust I'd saved from another project, what I don't know, but it gave a bit of smokiness to the dust from Jerry's. It looks pretty darn good right now, but after they go thru the oil, and polishing.....that's when all's reviled.
I did the worst, of the two scales, tonight. The other is easy peesy, and will be done tomorrow, and then they can soak up some oil for a few days. :nj

That spot on the side is a little noticable but its filled and with all the color change in the scales i think its a fine job. I think it would have been only magic if you couldnt tell it was filled. Amazing work Mike. Looks like the spit didnt change the color at the tip. Oh well. Just more color change. I think it looks nice! Goes from dark to light.
I'm hoping it'll blend in a bit more after the oil n polish.
Looking at it from other angles, its not that noticeable.
The tobacco was working, but I needed to sand them a bit to even up the pivot area. Being it was white, i t needed to blend in with the rest of the scale.
I'm very happy with the results ( at this point ). This ain't easy to do, with all the color changes, and overlapping streaks., but its been a hoot, to do.
Well your doing a great job and learning some too. I cant thank you enough. :tu
Scales look sweet, outback!
On making washers smaller, Jerry, You were on the right track. One of those Dremel mandrels for cut-off wheels will hold the washer(s).
Run the dremel slowly against the side of a stone(Or running bench grinder stone) to grind the OD down where you want them.
Then, put them on a pin-vise one at a time to run them against the buffer before, and after doming them if you wish.
Thanks Tom. I got some of those mandrels. Didnt think of that one. I need to pick up a pin vise still. Thanks for the lesson.
Repairs are done, all sanded, and soaking in Oil.

Looking good mgmike.
Don't know about the Venza, it's AWD, but definitely has some drift to it when there's lots of snow.
Surprisingly, my 550i GT, NOT xDrive, AST though but rear wheel drive, is a ferkin' tank in the snow, like a 2 ton snow plow, wife was shocked that it handled in the snow much better than the Toyota.
But I've read some stuff about how the AWD works....couple of times I found myself moving in a perfect straight line down the road, just sideways.....:rofl2:
Nice Mike. The machine gun strikes again. The insides are a lot darker than the outside. Guess i didnt otice that. The soaking helped like you said to blend the filling. Im glad you like me, or this would have cost 10 times as much to get you to do it for me.
Now im curious about what pins/washers and what you might do to the blade. If nothing, thats cool to but i got a feeling you got some ideas already. Damn im excited. And now i got to go to bed. That aint going to help. Ha.
Hes got the blade too. It was for sale here on the forum, dressed in some new type material. I did some horse swapping for it and he still had the original scales. I think it was listed as 1700s razor. Im thinking 1800 but im not sure. Guess we will see what Mike does, then others can say its age. Past my bedtime. Good night.
Just playing, Finally able to do that here:
Winchester Blade in...what else? Gunstock scales:
Attachment 284217
A buddy that shares his shop space when I need top make a mess is into razors and guns. He will do the final on the blade.
PIF to him!
~Richard
Great job on those scales Mike, as usual.
Richard, that razor looks amazing. I really like it great work there :tu
