Just kept packing it in there with my toothpick, till she couldn't take anymore. Lots of sanding afterwards.

I'm curious as to what may have gone wrong with Jerry's attempt with epoxy filling holes...?
Hey Jerry do you think that you may have accidentally put too little hardener?
OR
Is it something with mixing in the wood or horn dust so as to then need more hardener?
Yes, CA can be a serious PITA to sand down.
It may be because the length of the available ivory was short enough to require a shorter tang. Interestingly, I had a similar problem with a razor which I used to make some sets of scales for a few similar razors. The blade of a known brand was shorter than usual. Those scales came out about that much too short 3/16th to use. I may be cutting a new holes in the blade tangs I wished to pair.

Not too sure what went wrong Mike. I will try again with a broken scale I've saved for parts later. The horn dust I used was made by the use of 120 grit W/D paper.
The CA cleaned up and the Sharpie did a great job! I dropped them back into the oil after the Sharpie coloring thinking it will pull out a little ink and it did. Just enough. Drying now, then I will give them a good polishing. This razor won't be as nice as the work the "Machine Gun" puts out, but I'm happy with the outcome so far.
One Thing... It was pinned without collars originally, so I will put some I got from Austin on it. I'm just hoping they will look right on it.
Just finished restoring this seven day set .Set was not in bad shape.Razors just need a little Cleaning and Polishing .I honed the razors on Sharpton Glass up to 16 K .Than I finished each day of the week with a different Natural Stone .

Now that's a cool idea!
Nice idea on the different stones. You will soon find out what worked best on that steel. Be sure to let us know what you find
Did some reading from the beginning of this thread. I'm a slow reader so it's taking longer.
Also it is slower from stopping and thinking about the input
Man o man some of you guys have some highly developed skillsets!
Jus goin to keep on keepin on all the way thru this mountain!
I'l take some pictures of my razors to get ideas from you guys
There have been a lot of guys post a lot of work in this thread. One of the great things about this thread, from my perspective, is the technique discussions. There is a ton of information shared that way, and I also really like the razor porn, from the work in progress to the finished projects.
I've got my "drilling errors" filled with dust and epoxy, and I'm just waiting for the epoxy to dry. I had forgotten to collect the dust when I was originally sanding, but I was able to make some from a throwaway set of scales I had and a sanding attachment on my dremel. I appreciate the advice I've gotten here in regard to this process.
If anyone remembers my Tally Ho scales from a few pages back, one side is mostly black and the other is a honey horn. I wonder if the one half had been dyed at one point? The honey horn color revealed itself after I started sanding.
Anyway, I might try using hair dye like I saw here recently to get them matching.
I've got my pinning supplies from ajkenne (great service) and also some neatsfoot oil. These scales should be ready to pin shortly.
Is it common for scales to be cut in a way to make a wedge unnecessary? These were done that way.
Your a better man than me Jameson!
I couldn't possibly read this entire thread. I tried before. It's just too long nowadays. I wish there was a way to condense it. What I did, in the beginning, was to find a good post I wanted to remember and copy and paste it into a file on my computer. After a while, I started deleting some of those as I learned them and made my own file with a header and my own words explaining how. This way I could find the info quicker and it was shorter. Good luck reading it all. I too read slowly so I feel your pain. But welcome to the thread and when your ready post some pics. We will be happy to help get ya started. Just don't expect to be knocking them out like Machinegun Mike. He has some magic dust or something that allows him to knock them out 3 times as fast as others do.
Mike, I will give the collarless a try. I got some junk scales I can play on. If I don't like it I will go with the small cup collars. I will get some time today to get this finished up. Will post a pic later.
Sonny, there are cut that way sometimes. It was just another way to go about it. I've found it on molded plastic more often, but on horn too.
Sonny, they used to dye a lot of the scales black, so matching them was not an issue. I’ve seen a few like that too and hair dye is a viable plan.
I've tried to read the whole thread too. Think I've finished maybe 90%. But my brain doesn't hold little details so I've got a few pads of paper that hold key info. Though the organization is not great, I really like having those books of SR workshop knowledge.. those books are special to me.
The wedgeless scales are not a favorite of mine as I like having a wedge in there.
Jerry that popsicle stick suggestion is a good one, but with your experience, I would assume that you will have no problem.
I found and remembered that the pins were a bit bigger than standard when I took it apart. After trying to pin Collarless, I found it was just not going to work with the bigger holes. So I used the Cup Collars. I did pin up some old scales collarless, so I now know its not too hard to do.
I'm not as happy with the finished product, but its finished beside going to the stones. It's not bad, but I was hoping for a bit better fit and finish. It's hard to compare and keep up with Outback and Tom. But I will keep on trying. :)

Shoot Jerry, that looks great!
You should be proud of that work.
Its been a all dayer, here at the workbench.
Started the day with MikT's Never Dull. Wasn't going to be able to clean the dirt out of the little cracks, inside each pin hole, so I ended up making some small SS domes, for collars to hide the cracks n dirt. As well, I dismantled Mikes 9/16 Klas Tornblum, Rattler. Gave it a good cleaning with 3M, polished the scales, and pinned up with small SS domes, and Nickle Silver rod, and both were honed.

The highlight of the day was finishing MrZ's last two. A couple of beauties, needing no more than a clean up around the pivots, and some polish.
So we start here with the scales...Before.

After... With a 7/8ths. George Savage & Sons, and a 6/8 Wostenholms. Brass Frameback.

The Savage has been honed, so I'm heading off for a shower n test shave.

BTW...Thus is the first time this Savage has ever been honed.. So sweet..!!
We are our own worst critics.
Those are looking good MGM.
Happy test shave!
MachineGunMike strikes again!
That Savage and the Wosty.. Crazy how good they are looking! Have fun with that Savage, I've never shaved with one of those, but if looks could determine then I think it will be great.
I'm also looking forward to a comparison between the Never Dull and the Tornblom. I am a big fan of Klas Tornblom razors, but though I haven't tried that Never Dull, I think it will be a good one. It has beautiful lines.
The ivory scales look like a perfect match! And they have been waiting for a blade for 10years or so.
Awesome dude! Thank you!
:beer1:
Looking good Mike. Those look like great shavers.
Thanks, guys.
I put the Frechy on the stones and it took a bit of work to get a bevel set. But that was expected being a near wedge and with all the sanding I did. But in the end it took a nice edge. The bevel is a little wider than I like but I didn't want too great of a bevel angle so I stuck with one layer of tape. Then, I figured I had all the stuff out so I touched up 3 more razors that I had honed before I really had an understanding of honing.

It sure is nice to be able to look and feel and understand what is going on between the stone and the blade. Two were finished on the 20K. 1 on the Arkie and 1 on a Jnat. The naturals are still not really clear to me yet, but they sure felt good in the end. Popping hairs easy.
I got 7 now that need a test shave. And since I only shave every two days now, that's two weeks. I've spent a lot of time on the stones getting my collection up to snuff these last few weekends.
The Test Shave Cup!

I ended up using a lead wedge on the Never Dull, Mike.
She's perfectly balanced.

I honestly can’t wait to get the package from Outback. Eventually I need to find a better way to display such nice work.
Mike- yep I was wondering how it would balance, I've become particular about that, as well as the space between blade and wedge, so many of the SR I've purchased have close to an half inch there! Lol.
And the wedges I've been seeing are flat, and clearly hurting the scales, going through my razors I've got a bunch that need to be fixed.
MrZ- I've been thinking the same thing more and more!
Got all these SR locked up in cases... How to display them while protecting them from RH and from my kids.
I'm gonna have to find a plastic glass company, have them cut some Lexan and I'll make a case with RH control...
And laser beams! Dang it, I want laser beams! Lol
Shaved with the E. Barberon (20K Edge) and the H. Boker (Jnat Edge) and both turned out to be great shavers. Fine edges on both. If I had to pick one edge over the other I couldn't. Both were very fine and comfortable.
Only clean strops used so no pastes or special strop dressing were used. I think I'd rather use the H. Boker as its more along the weight and grind that I prefer, but both were excellent shavers and gave a BBS shave. I don't get BBS that often but now and then it all comes together perfectly.
The Barberon is a big heavy blade, and not what I enjoy using as much, but the shave it gave was very nice. Used it for the Shave of the Day Pic.
Beautiful restoration work gents!
Happy to see all the fine works afoot.

Doing some razor piddling to-day. Finishing some unfinished projects.
Finally did the silver rubnbuff in the tangs stamps on my 6/8 Top Flight and pinned-up my 6/8 Blackie CMon.
Attachment 296321
Here they are with their 5/8 brethren. Austin's silver collars on all.
I need only to hone the 6/8 Blackie and all will be shaving. :y This ain't been easy, you know! :roflmao

Nice stripes Tom!
I was wondering when he would stripe again.
Looking good Tom.
Thanks, Rez......I have...Uh....Overstriped again! Attachment 296329
Seeing those blades reminded me of when you did a set of seven in striped scales and the name of the thread was “help before I stripe again” or something similar. It made me smile all over again seeing the new striped bunch.
It's Twew, it's twew!

A little something I threw together tonight. W&B 11/16 1/4 hollow. Lots of pitting and hone wear but I put it on the buffer for a while and cleaned it up. Pinned it in black plastic scales since I had some laying around.
Attachment 296335Attachment 296336
Still needs to go on the stones. I'm down to 2 razors now that I need to make scales for before I'm all out of razor work to do. The restoration drawer is empty! Guess I will need to start buying some more blades soon. But this time I will get a little more picky about what I buy!
OK, AFTER the C.C. Bill goes down a bit more. :rofl2: SWMBO is starting to frown at my bill.
Go upscale, Jerry! Convince the wife that the best razors are worth the money and such,,,,,
What kindof razor nuts are we, anyway? :rofl2:
I'd love to pick up a Bruno Blade and a Victor Blade, but then those wouldn't need work. Ha.
Boy, the wife would hit the ceiling after seeing that bill! :rofl2:
Spent a little time on the edge of this old W&B. Its going to take some serious work to get an edge on. Starting to wonder what I did. It will come around, but not tonight. Got to go watch a few episodes of Forged in Fire before the wife erases the 60 I got copied. :) Hoping to see our fellow member on one of them. I dont know what episode it was so I guess I will just keep watching. Could be watching worse things.
