But you could go as thin as 1/8", but 1/4" is probably better. As for the holes, it depends on how long the top is, and how big a hole you need.
Once you have that figured out, then measure and mark your holes so their evenly spaced across your piece of wood.

good, cause I was hoping to go with 1/2" for the top plate as it would show more razor. My widest razor is approx.. 1", so I was thinking 1 1/4" for the holes with a 1/2" in between. so the razor holes + space in between = 6 1/2" with a 1 1/2 left to play with for the dowels. I'm not sure how big I want the bottom plate to be yet, but 1" of the razor should stick out for grabbing as they are all approx. 6" long
