It feels softer to the face, almost blunt in a way. The vary first time I shaved with one, I thought I was using the spine. Its hard to explain, it has to be felt

I agree. Its different feeling. I like it and wish I had more of them. Sounds lime Aaron needs to buy one and ship it to Mike for fixing so he can feel it too.
They're beautiful, and I would love to shave with one. Maybe y'all will laugh, but I always look at that tang to blade transition without a thumb notch, shoulder, stabilizer-just practically a straight line, and I wonder if I wouldn't slip and cut my thumb half off. I imagine you have to be mindful of that, no?
There's always the Cut of the Day to help keep us entertained--

You do have to keep the bottom of the tang in mind and no slips.
I finally finished up the "Cutting Board" Combo I had been working on a few weeks ago. I had to wait the usual eternity to restock some of my favorite collars from our Romanian friend-I should have ordered sooner. The blade is an Army Navy CSL (Cooperative Society Limited according to this link): http://https://www.housefraserarchiv...pany/?id=c0512Typical soft British steel from that era that took an easy, incredible edge off of my huge black Arkansas followed up by about 50 laps on the yellow-green thuri bout Jerry sold me. I gave it a very gentle wedge angle with a matching redheart piece so as not to put too much stress on that cutting board laminate, which I backed with black G10 for stability.

My woodworker friend who keeps me supplied with cutoffs, scale blanks and scraps turned that brush handle for me (which got me into turning), so I figured the least I could is make him a combo set with the cutoffs from his cutting boards and pepper-mills, as that look is kind of his "brand." Plus, I like to do different and unusual projects-this one fit the bill.

Outstanding!
I like! :tu
Very nice Aaron. A set of any kind is always pleasing.
Thanks, fellas-I just got back from delivering it to my friend, who was very pleased. A "cutting board" straight is certainly not for everyone (and I've certainly never seen another one), but I knew he would appreciate it. As for sets, I'm even thinking of doing them with not just a brush and straight (and bowls at some point), but maybe even turning handles to put DE heads on (or even, God forbid), Mach III or Fusion or whatever the latest cartridge heads are.
We'll see what this crazy school year gives me time to do if I don't get covid from a student lol!
(Oh, and I forgot to mention that both brush and scales got about a dozen coats of TruOil and a few coats of RenWax buffed in).
Looks pretty cool, Aaron.
I've thought about doing that with the scrap pieces I have laying around, but I'd probably have to use a liner, or a couple layers of 3/4 oz fiberglass, to keep them from snapping at a joint.
Nice work Aaron!
Here are two brushes I finished today.
Black and White Ebony with badge and Real Ebony with a Boar knot...

All this wood is making me miss my shop even more.
P.S
Nice work you two!
Yes. I am a medic at a Canadian Coast Guard Search and Rescue Station. I work a 21 day shift, where I am at the station 24 hours a day for the shift. I then get 21 days off. It sounds pretty grand for time off, but I also do not get evenings, weekends or stat holidays. It’s not for everyone. It’s not like we get to pick our crew. I’m fortunate as three of us have been together for many years. We have worked it all out. The fourth on our shift changes very often. The other factor that has kept me out of the shop, is my wife, son, his wife and I are doing a full rehab on a run down house. It’s a lot of time on my days off.
Holy Smokes Gasman! Those are some beauties! So what are your plans for them?
Priceless Roy.

Great one Roy.
Thanks guys on the brushes. Aaron, Im working on my CA finish and am getting pretty happy with it so these are 9 to 12 coats of CA. And it only takes a little time compared to the days it takes to do scales.
Lather them up is the first plan for them but... I have to admit one was made-to-order for someone. Now Im not taking orders on brushes guys so dont start contacting me. This was just a trial thing. And I have to say making a brush to order is not as fun as just letting the shape happen.
It was fun to try but the preasure is on when making a shape someone else wants. Now I know why the cost of custom brushes is high. The materials and effort that goes into it is more than I realised. So in the futute you may see one of these brushes in someone elses SOTD. But for now, Im not selling. At least until I get a stock on hand and get my selling license on SRP.
Very nice Jerry. I must say I'm impressed with how quickly you progressed to this quality.
Beautiful brushes Jerry.
Impressive work...that lathe and the tools were a good investment.

Looks like your gonna need knots donated to the monthly giveaway. Eh!?
Not a bad idea Mike. Thanks all. I didnt get any turned on my Sunday but made a handwheel for the lathe and a large knob for the Kockout rod.
Attachment 323081Attachment 323082
I didnt want to use big money wood to make the wheel so I glued to pieces of 3/4" plywood together and turned it. Made for a nice wheel. What comes factory on the lather is only 2.5" dia. This will work much better. And with a little sanding and some Shine Juice to seal its good to go.
Looks good :tu
I am wondering why you didn't make a handle to be placed toward the outside of the diameter of the wheel to turn the new wheel with? It too could have been made of plywood. Just wondering.
When I was 14 I started 'working' for a local machinist (Bert) for a merit badge for Boy Scouts. He had his very first lathe that he'd ever purchased. He said when he had finalized the deal he asked the seller if he could also purchase a length of Brass Rod to use as a knock out. He said the guy said "Oh I could sell you some but after awhile you'd just grab any piece of shaft to drive the center out". Bert said he told the guy that he promised that he'd Never Ever use anything other than that brass rod to drive the center out with and he never did!
He had built a pair of hooks to hold that original brass rod under that lathe and he always used it to drive the chuck out with.
I'm just wondering if that picture was of a nickle silver coated brass shaft or steel.
You lost me on your question Roy. A handle on a wheel? The outer edge of the wheel is thicker so gripping the outer edge is easier. As far az the knock-out rod goes, its the one that came with the lathe. I just took the tiny ball off the end and screwed on my larger sized one. It was just 1/4 x 20 threads. I think its steel as i did not see any sign of brass even one the cut threads.
I think he means like this ?

Or like a suicide knob on a steering wheel. Something to give you a spot that’s easier to grip and allows you to get a bit more leverage.
I finished this up this week. I do like these, and every time I make one I think that I will have to keep one for myself. So far that hasn't happened. It's my take on a Puma.

DVW-That's a beautiful knife!
Jerry-Way to keep moddin' your rig there. I need to make me one of them thar hand-wheels. I've made a couple of face-plate jam-chucks, so it looks like a pretty simple turn (especially compared to all the tight work on a shaving brush lol!).
I think what I need most right now is to make a tool rack. That slanted rack on the stock Laguna table just lets them wobble all over the place unsupported. You were smart to bolt yours to that custom bench. Then carbides, sharpening wheels and jigs, sheesh-the lathe really is the cheapest part of this!
DVW nice knife! Love the looks of it.
Just finished this up. It is the last of the NOS SMKW that I purchased. This one I cut down both ends of the scales and made a new wedge for it. The "wedge" that they come with in pretty pathetic. Also, I added stainless steel pins, and I got a little crazy re-grinding the shape of the blade. I do like little stubby razors.

Sweet knife. I assume that is modded celluloid or bone not actually antler? Looks really nice.
