Guys, some nice working going on for sure. Outback, thanks for the tip on using the wax stick for the brush letters, looks really good. I'm thinking of reknotting and fixing up a couple old brushes so that's a timely little post. Bookmarked that one! BeJay, that razor turned out a beauty. And nice scales Eric. If I could get a little shop time I might actually be able to contribute something here one of these days, but I've got some things in the works.
I have a thought on that. Bone is a pretty dense material. Bone scales with a lead wedge can put a light blade out of balance.
Horn would be a great choice too, as long as it is the right weight.
Maybe I'm too picky about it, but I really hate stropping an out of balance blade.
The bone looks great. It is probably my favorited material.
Cool beans just wanted to make certain :D
The blade going in is just a 5/8 wedge nothing huge. I will be using brass pins and have plenty of brass so I can do another brass wedge. I have enough horn left to do that or I am not opposed to something new :D I like the bone it is definitely some dense stuff. Polishes like crazy I will use it again. I have even thought about working out a simple cross, arrow and circle B to scrimshaw into the show side of the scale. But I would have to get more bone to practice with. You are the bone master I am a ways away from making the bone creations you do :D
As with all things, it is about time and practise. I do not feel as though I have gotten to master status, yet. It is a goal to know my tools and material better, and produce nice pieces with more ease. We are making progress with every project.
With a 5/8 wedge you would likely be fine with any wedge. It seems the more weight in general the less critical it is.
Hey guys, I picked up a couple razors today, thanks Addison:tu
But is there a way to straighten out warped wood scales?
One of the awesome ones, the scales on the tip are warped quite a bit. Enough that you have to hold the toe away so it doesn't hit.
I'm going to try to have it shave ready for Sunday's SOTD.
It's not in bad shape at all so this shouldn't be a problem. The one thing I noticed is that someone honed one side into the stabilizer on the heel. But I'm guessing that it shouldn't be a problem
