Default Advice on rectifying hone wear

    Hi
I have this vintage Joseph Rodgers razor with considerable hone wear and would appreciate some advice from the experts on the best way to make a decent restoration ?
How would you do it ?

There comes a point when a razor is just done,,,

I guess you could have it re-ground but that will be $$

I would hone it as best you can and see if it even shaves well before throwing good money at it...

I have a couple of ugly ducklings that still shave well. If it still shaves and doesn't bother you it's all good. Otherwise...

Electrical tape on the spine & mark the edge with a sharpie, and lot of alcohol unless your not old enough to drink

Thanks Glen - I might try to carefully grind down the spine to even up both sides and then attempt honing ?

Some say I'm too old and already drink too much - Ah, what the hell, any excuse !

That will just ruin it even more, just put on a layer or three of tape and hone it, if you get a good edge use it or, like Glen said, consider sending it to someone for a regrind.

I had one with a similar problem - a 4/8 Salamander, it had wonky spine wear, I did the tape and marker thing and I'm happy to say it all worked out, still have the razor 3 years later. And make sure your hones are flat!! don't want you falling off the hone while drinking!

Honestly I would slap on 3-4 layers of tape and use the MM trick like Trimmy said, and see where the bevel starts at, hopefully that will cut the bevel that is there in 1/2 at least and get you a shaving edge...

    and use plenty of "Lubrication"

i would go the multi layers of tape first
1st layer or 2 or required to get the thickness to your liking for build up of the spine thicness & hone this tape down to the the even thickness then apply the final layer of tape as for normal noning
this process has been writen out previously in honing for uneven spine wear etc
I have had to do this with a pig of a W&B with a poor spine condition
just keep a track of what you do so it can be replicated later if required for touch ups etc

Edit: as Glen siad just beat me on the post LOL
