Lightbulb Worn out Wedge Style razor - Re-grind or a new idea !!!

Had an Aha !!!! moment in the shop today and want to flesh it out a bit...

I was thinking about this thread

    http://straightrazorpalace.com/works...hone-wear.html

    And the razor from it

    Name: Worn Wedge.jpg

Size: 33.9 KB

Then what Rune/Zephyr said in the thread, which is advice I have also given multiple times about not grinding down the spine even more because it makes the geometry even worse..

As I was in my Zenfucious sanding scales state of contemplation a thought came together in my horn dust addled brain

When people buy a near wedge razor they do so to shave with that heavy blade not a Hollow Grind, for at least 100 years the fix for a worn wedgey razor has been a "Re-grind" which hollows out the heavy steel...
    Then it hit me

I have always said you can't add steel back to the razor so you have to add tape or re-grind -BUT- I proved myself wrong on that, and sort of did it once

    here http://straightrazorpalace.com/vendo...r-customs.html

By adding a Brass spine back to a Frameback

So thinking it through as I sanded away, I started imagining a reverse process, where instead of hollowing out the old wedge, you would even it up and then add a Brass or SS spine back on..
This would be much easier to do, and would keep the heavy steel wedge feel to the blade which was the reason to buy it in the first place...

    Thoughts ????

Very good idea. I have a razor here that has been sitting around that looks like someone ground it away till it was a true wedge and couldn't figure out what to do with it. Hone it as a true wedge, which would be a PITA or something else. I like this idea alot better. I might have to give it a go. You just keep coming up with all these ideas and my head won't hurt as much from trying to figure this stuff out. My head thanks you. How do you go about adding the brass? Pinch it in place?

Hmm, why not? Theoretically I believe it could work, just need to find something to use as spine that adds enough, but not too much mass so you get the proper honing angle.

Basically it would be like adding 3-4 permanent layers of tape to the spine

I'm intrigued by the idea, it would be interesting to try it out.
I don't think I have any real beaters lying around at the moment, but I'm going on my weekly swap meet hunt on sunday so I'll keep my eye out for some.

First time I'm going to be looking for a beat up razor

You could call it - "Super Frame back....wedge"
So are you thinking the spine would need evened out before applying the new spine? I can't see how it wouldn't work. Every time I hone a wedge I use tape, so what would be the difference if you added a new "spine" other than it would be even now. Good idea!

Is a great Idea Glen,am certain it would work, than again I think some blades should just be laid to rest, some are just not worth saving.
As I recall I think you eluded to that about the above blade.

It looks very nice... but so did the gals who gave me __________, back in the day.

I have an equally worn Henry Sears & Son and, like you, wouldn't dream of having it reground. Instead, I add another layer of tape, and feel "pure".

Every choice is the "right" choice; after all, there are always more razors where this one came from (or from elsewhere).
You can have everything, and still not have enough.
I'd give it all up, for just a little more.

Glen, I have a Wade and Butcher with similar hone wear. I'll donate it to you in the name of science if you want to experiment.

Yeah you have a point there, just thinking outside the box toward another option

    1. Toss it away
    2. Tape it up
    3. Hollow Grind it
    or maybe
    4. Frameback it

Just pondering I mean what else can you do while sniffing Buffalo Horn dust
