Since the hole is irregular, chances are some parts of it will be narrower than the tubing. I had a couple of choppers like that. So I needed to grind a bit of metal off the outside before cutting the end and gently tapping it in there with the hammer. Once the pin went through, I ended up with a tight, smooth-operating setup.

OK, here is the image of what I was talking about earlier with the 'rivet collar' pin set up...

This might help, or something like it for that oversized hole problem.

Let me know if you want me to send you a few....

Thanks for the offer Chris. I am assuming using these would entail getting my hands on a rivet gun?

Nope. Not at all! (Unless you want to use them as an excuse because you have always wanted a rivet gun)

You'd just peen over one end of the rod (I think one might already be done), and use the rivet-collars in the holes, what sticks through the other side (inside of the scales) you can file/sand flush with the inside of the scales. Then repeat on the otherside, and pin the scales as if you had a 'regular' set up. The 'rivet collars' would work in the same manner as the small washer or regular collar, only these have a little tube attached to fill that oversized hole.

    Um, er, well...no.

I'm bad at keeping address and numbers, so I'll need that again. PM me the details again, and I'll send a few your way. How many do you need (2, 3...)?

Just let us know how they work!

2 would be fine, enough to pin one razor as an experiment. The PM is about to be sent. I hope that everyone sees what a nice bunch of gentlemen we cultivate here

    Yesterday I received Joe's pins.

They are of course a lot thinner than the hole I am trying to fill.
I was thinking about drilling out the hole and then plugging it with a 4 mm wide brass rod.

I could then drill a small hole in the brass insert to use as a pin hole.

The only problem is that I only have metric drills, so the pin hole would be 2 mm whereas the pins would be 1.6 mm.

How much of a gap is there usually?
if .4mm is too much i'll buy a 1/16" drill.

First off, you don't need to. It worked before, it'll work now. Most of the holes in old razors (particularly Sheffield razors) are uneven and way too big. They were hot-punched during the forging, and not drilled. If you must clean it up, the above suggestions will probably work. You can also fill the pivot hole with J-B Weld, let it dry, sand it flat and even with the shank, then drill a new pivot hole the size you want. The scales will cover this area.
