    Default Well, another restoration...I guess

I'm not really all that impressed with this one. After getting half way through the design, I started to really not like the looks of it. It took me well over a month to finish these....not because it was difficult, just because I would find better things to do. The blade was worked on by someone else, so I had to make do with the prior work that was already done, in that it needed more work to clean it up (you can see sort of a 'wavey-ness' to the blade face from the 'earlier work'. The face is not dark like in the scan, but polished to a mirror shine). I sanded the spine/tang area to a satin finish, and polished/sanded the blade to a near mirror finish (prior work that was done on the blade left some deep scratches that I do not have the energy/time to work on....plus, I would probably loose the blade stamp.

The scales are purple heart, with brass tubing-inlay (sort of a whim design), brass and black fiber paper liners. A highly unnecessary third/middle pin (asthetics). Sanded to 8K, and coated many times with truoil.

I love TI razors, but I don't love this scale-restoration design

I'm thinking my next set will be something inspired by one of Robert Williams early designs and peas 'first restoration' look....basically, something more sleek and stream line.

    We'll see!

P.S. There is a good chance I might sell this TI restoration, but am not sure....Perhaps I'll make a different set of scales for this blade.....

    Same, I don't hate it.

You mentioned the liners (black fiber paper liners). Where did you get them??? I've been using plastic folder covers which seem to be working well but wouldn't mind trying something else.

I don't know - I really like the way the scales follow the line of the frameback and notch down where the spine joins the tang - when its closed, the scales just follow the lines of the blade - I think it works pretty well - I think it looks better closed than open.

Nice work, Chris! -- and thanks for posting the pictures.

I kind of like the scales. That said, who did this prior work? It looks to me like that blade is toast. It's got a rainbow near the tip, which I believe is indicative of heating to annealing temperature. Not 100% on that, but it's work checking if the thing will shave now. - jOHN

I think that rainbow effect comes from the scanner rather than the blade.

The 'rainbow' effect is from the scanner. To try and catch the difference between the satin finish on the spine/tang and the mirror finish on the blade, I had to sacrifice one for the other on the scanner. So, while the blade looks dark and 'rainbowed' it is really mirrored, and not bad at all for condition. She'll hone up like any TI, I'm sure.

As for the fiber paper, let me find the link when I get home tonight. It's a site that Bill Ellis recommended a while back for the spacer material he uses. It feels, and cuts like construction paper, but is VERY tough. I was hesitant at first when I bought it, but I really like the stuff! It's cheap too!!

Actually, now that I think of it, PM or email me (taztu at hotmail) and I'll send you a sheet. I had to buy a bunch to make the S/H worth it.

I agree with what Lou said -- whatever. I like 'em.
