Default 1/8 of inch chip in Goldedge

some time ago i ordered a lot of dubl ducks, one stainedge, one special 1 and a gold edge, the goldedge has a chip wich i knew about. the satin and the special 1 are great. Shaved with the satinedge this morning awsome! anyway, the goldedge is a 6/8 and i figure if i can get the crack out it'll end up being a 5/8. Whats the best way to get the chip out? anytoughts? anybody managed to take such a big chip out and still have a viable shaver? should i tape the spine?

You say "get the crack out". I assume you mean chip. If there is a crack the blade is worthless. The chip your talking about is kind of big. But not a loss. You can use the 1K and start grinding away. Your going to have to remove alot of metal and yes tape the spine. Just make sure you hone evenly and once you've got the chip out move to the 4K and reestablish the bevel and on from there. Personally I've never taken out a chip that large probably a 32nd of an inch is the largest and I just used circular honing on the 4K. I'm sure others will chime in who have actually done it though.

This is how I learned to hone my first razor to 'shave-sharp'! I sat down one afternoon with my 220/1K norton, and honed until I got my 1/8" deep x 1/4" long chip out of an FW Engels 'Lucky' (ironic name, huh) 6/8 blade. Then moved on to the 4K/8K hone. It took a LONG time, but I had my technique down by the end, and she was a smoooooth shaver!!

I did not tape the edge on mine...I'm not a fan of that high-falootin' tapin' stuff.

The easiest way? A slow speed belt grinder. It's gonna take forever (and 18 minutes) on a stone.

One pass on a 2x72 belt sander with a 400 grit is equivalent to about 500 passes on a 1k stone. You can work out a nick in about a minute and a half.

Jeez! I wish I knew that then! (and owned a belt sander )

Joe knows what he's talking about, so for times sake, and if y ou own a beltsander PM him and discuss the details of 'how' so you don't throw a razor across the room or at your self.

When I did it, it was years ago, and if I recall it took me quite a while, hours. Probably in the area of 4-5hr. Mind you though, I was also learning at the time, so it did take me a bit longer than it might today....BUT, I do try to avoid those blades today

Good luck, and keep us posted as to what you decide, and how it goes!
(I like before and after pictures too )

Default Here are the Before Pictures

Heres the before, and hopefully the after are gonna be ready soon ! I think im gonna do it by hand, altought the belt sander technique is intriguing, I do not own a belt sander, and to tell you the truth the idea of using a power tool on the goldedge kinda scares me. Not for my personal safety but rather for the safety of the Blade!! Im affraid that since i am pretty unexperienced using a belt sander would result in cracking the blade wich thank god it is not! I dont care if it takes me 12 hours im doing this by hand! and i think im gonna get more satifaction out of it! Plus like you mentioned C utz i should do wonders for my honing technique

With a chip like that, you're more likely to crack it by not using a belt on it. One that bad, in that location, on a full hollow might cause me to trash the blade. Best of luck, though.
