I ruined too many blades by being over anxious and agressive. Its good to be motivated , That said you really need just a little direction and mentoring. I can say from experience that my mentor has helped me save many blades. The community wants you to succeed. Just get some input first.
My mentor told me to get to clean non pitted steel before you go any farther. He insisted I do this by hand and go no coarser than 220 grit. I didnt like that answer .....But I took the advise and I had good results. You will grow and be an asset if you are open to the proven order of operation that the community at large has proved through trial and error. Learn from my mistakes, without ruining a good blade. Good learning and luck.
