Default What comes between flapwheel and polish

I just started experimenting with a flapwheel that I bought. It is for use in a standard electric drill, not a dremel.

I got an old razor from Ivo that I sprinkled with water and then left to rust overnight. I then used the flapwheel on it.

The flapwheel left scratch marks all over the spine. When I put the wheel to the blade itself these scratches were a lot less severe. Probably because the contact surface is larger.

Is this something that can be expected? I have looked around, but it seems that flap wheels have a max grit of ~120. What is the next logical step after / in place of a flap wheel?

    Hi Bruno,

You can get higher grits upto 400 in flap wheels at http://www.widgetsupply.com/page/WS/...ing-flap-wheel, and these should fit either a dremel or an electric drill.

    Cheers

Thanks. The max grit I could find was 120, but mine does not have a rating. I think it is even less: 40 - 80 or something.

400 should be a lot finer so that I dont tear gouges in the spine.

    Sorry Bruno,

My excuse but it's a bit early in the morning here. I of course forgot that you are in Belgium, and therefore Widgetsupply may not really be too handy for you, but they do ship internationally.

    ""International Orders
Shipments to Australia, Belgium, Belize, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Grenada, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom only. We will consider other countries on a case by case basis. We will not ship to Asia, Africa, Central America. We only ship international items once or twice per week, not daily.""

    Cheers
    John

They have very reasonable international shipping rates. I think it's like $5 to ship to Canada. That's why 9 flap wheels (3 of 120, 240 and 400) cost me less shipped than a single 80 grit flap at the local Wal Mart

    ditto to Australia

I picked up $US100 worth of kit from Widget Supply a little while ago. Of the things that were even available here the local cost would have been 3 times that what I paid at widget supply.

For the record, 400 is still not enough. For a nice finish, you have to go to at least 800 or 1000, and 1500 to 2000 for true mirror.

For this you need hand sanding or I hear (but have not tried) - Jason's drums

Jason is a member and his nickname is Toxik. Look up some of his past work (the link is in his sig), it's absolutely stunning. Here's the tutorial on how to make these puppies http://lordsofquake.net/~ToxIk/dsh/dsh.html

Doh. I knew that. I just didn't remember I knew.

Anyway, that's a nice trick. I think I am going to try to make a flapwheel in a similar way
