low rpm buffer on the chp
Trying to find out a solution to anm expensive low rpm buffer - found this - buffer from Harbor freight 39.00, router speed controller Harbor freight 20.00 . tapered buffing spindles -ebay 15.00. Works like a charm - no torque at very low speeds but works great at about 1200 up to 3400rpm (just a guess) great for acrylic too!! All of these can be found on sale at different times!!!!!

Thanked: 3795It's a relatively cheap experiment, but I was under the impression that doing this on a motor not designed for it would cause it to burn out.

Harbor Freight says this will work on this motor this is what the controller is designed for - working great so far - I'm no rocket scientist though

Thank you for the speed control tip! The buffer is a great one and can do wondrous deeds. I have had mine for years and my buddy uses eight inch wheels on his and 220 grit and does gun barrels. Hotter than you want to touch and he's done that for years.

Speed controls are usually not used with synchronous motors like that. Low voltage usually means higher current and resulting heat. I have not tried the speed control on any but brush type universal motors, such as drills and routers.
Next time I might!

From HF page:
""
Plug your router into the control unit and you instantly have a variable-speed tool
Works with any universal AC/DC brush type motor, 15 amps and under
""
I did go to the HF page and went to revues, Some guys had luck with some other motor types.Last edited by Geezer; 05-14-2015 at 03:00 AM.

Thanked: 13246Well heck I wasted a whole lotta time searching out an 1100 RPM motor then if that thing works hehehe
I have 6 of the HF buffers for most of the Metal work but I needed a slower RPM for the Scales.. Dang many days wasted at the Junkyard looking at washing machine motors for nothing

I'll let you know if there is a problem - so far so good- only used it a couple of times - using a 4" wheel - very little heat build up
