Collarless pins and horn
I did a few Searches and came up with nothing. Found threads on ivory, bone, and wood with collarless pins but no horn.
any thoughts, ideas or experience with horn? I figure it can be done but what is the long term effectiveness of the pins. Will the horn split as it contracts and expands, will it cup?
I have some nice black horn with white streaks I want to use stainless pins on.
i can't see any reason not to except that no one has talked about it which makes me wonder why.

Peening. Not sure what spinning them is. Elaborate please.
Or are there any other alternatives to collars?

Thanked: 4829The only spinner I have seen is for making the rivets on chainsaw chains. It works well for them. I suppose the same thing could be used for any rivet. Sharptonn has done some pinning with very tiny washers that disappear under the peen. I am certain you can get a peen to be almost round and with the right shaped and sized dimple in your anvil. You will have to experiment and I look forward to your results.

Thanked: 13249This is one of the best but it ain't cheap
Once you mentioned SS pins things changed, which is why I asked, most of us use Nickel Silver pins, and SS washers some of which are tiny and can barely be seen..

I'll have to get som nickel silver rod, I just have stainless laying around.
There definitely will be a thread for this razor, assuming I don't explode the scales first.

Thanked: 3215I would think you could make something similar with a couple of nail sets.
I have polished and shaped pins and washers with a short piece of Bamboo with a divot on the end, the size of the finished pin I am trying to replicate. Dab on some .5 diamond paste and do small taps with the drill press adding diamond and tapping until you get where you want, final polish with a dab of Maas on the Bamboo.
JFK, make sure to taper your pin holes to prevent cracking.

I have a set of cheap punches that have a concave end that I have used on pin stock to form a nice dome at the end, but I always did that with the stock in a vice when it was already mushroomed from peening. Never used it on pivot pins already in the razor. Mainly only used them for pins that I use as decoration in scales that I would add after they were domed. After watching the video of the spinner I wonder if I could place my punches in chuck and use those to spin the ends. Will have to try it now.
