Thanked: 237opinions please
I just received my very first custom razor, fresh out of the snail forge. I have several options for scales, and want to know what you guys think.
Honey horn
Brown horn
Pearl kirinite
Red g10
Black g10
And my favorite, buckeye burl

Thanked: 4827Well if you had a clever way of doing a mixed honey horn and buckeye burl that would be where I would like to see you go. It could go with a very thin g10 liner. It could be pretty cool.

Thanked: 237I tend to prefer wood scales with no liners, but I might be tempted to try. I just started college as a transfer student to Virginia Tech, and I have access to a build lab with pretty much any piece of machinery I could ever need.
This is what my last buckeye burl scales turned out like...

Thanked: 4827Well if you have already done one set in the burl, I would move on over to the honey horn. It would be cool to take two slab, one buckeye, one horn. Both the same thickness and then stack them and tape them together, then do a patterned cut like a lightening bolt down the middle. Epoxy them together one burl zigzag and one horn, put it on the liner. half burl half horn divided lengthwise down the scale. But if you are looking for simple and traditional I would go straight honey horn.

I feel like the buckeye would compliment the hammered tang.

I think the Rams horn or the buckeye with a textured finish to go with the hammered blade

Thanked: 3215Yea, I like that rams horn too, and a textured, rusticated finish would look good.
Where did you get the Rams Horn and the brown horn, been looking for some brown?
Post your finish pics, the other Buckeye came out very nice, good work.

Thanked: 237Both were from ebay. I haven't bought the rams horn yet. The brown horn is from mygann, I've ordered lots of horn from that seller and it is always top notch. I think I'm going to go with textured finish on the buckeye. The rams horn might change my mind if I can force myself to commit to the purchase. I also want to blu and etch the blade.

Thanked: 237OK, Ive been busy working on this for a few days now, and found a good stopping point to post some progress pics. The progression is pretty cool to see when looking at the photos. Now all i need to do is make up my mind on a wedge...
