Thanked: 0I got woods
But which kind should I use for making scales? I've got Purpleheart, Black Walnut, some mahogany, cherry, Beech, Maple...I'm planning on replacing the scales on my George W. Korn and Wade and Butcher razors. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanked: 0Heh heh, my friend, I have a couple hundred boards of planed black walnut. It would take me a lifetime of collecting razors and making scales for me to use it up. When I go back home for the summer (the boards are at my parents' house) I think I might try offering small planks of it to members who want some (considering shipping costs don't get out of hand), and as long as my dad doesn't have any more projects for it.

Thanked: 1I'm interested in a coupla sets of wooden scales. Black Walnut might be nice...
My interest/concern is about the whole business of drying and stabilising the wood beforehand....
Drying it out throughly and curing it....
Then impregnating it with CA or Polyurethane goop....
Ideas, comment please...

Tony,
Over the past year or so there has been a number of threads which discussed what woods need stabilizing and what doesn't... I'm sure you could find the answer yourself if you tried. I don't mean this personally and I'm not picking on you alone... this shoe fits a number of other new members as well.
You joined the group only 2 months ago and have already made over 100 posts... that's a lot of posts for a newbie. Many of your posts ask questions that have been answered many many times in the past... have you considered using the search facility and spending some time reading? IMHO, the more knowledgeable people's time could be better spent discussing new topics instead of searching for old threads just so you don't have to... particularly outside the newbie forum. Some of the old threads you've posted to were by people who are no longer as active in the community as they were in the past (ie, when those threads were active)... if you'd done some reading you'd know that and wouldn't be frustrated when you don't get answers in a timely manner.
There's lots of good info in the help files, too... have you read them yet?

Thanked: 0I think I'm going to try and do a finish and rubbing out tests on scrap woods of black walnut and purpleheart using wipe on poly, CA, lacquer, shellac, and maybe tung oil. I'll post photos later when I get the chance and see which finish you guys think I should go with.
For the guys who are interested in the wood, I don't have PayPal but if you shoot me a PM I'm sure we could work something out.
Just a word of warning: this upcoming week might be a little bit busy for me, so I might not respond right away.
