Thanked: 315Nearly Finished, What Do You Think? Micarta W&B
Thanks to the help here, I'm almost done with my first complete rescale. I thought I would post a pic and see what you guy thought. I made a temporary wedge until I can get some white/ivory colored material and used microfasteners instead of pins. I'm also going to see if I can get a tube to put in the pivot hole of the blade to prevent any possible blade movement.
It turns out I was working with micarta instead of G10, so that is why I couldn't get the finish I was wanting. It was the first time I bought any of the material and it may have gotten mixed up by customers at the blade show. I'll try to post some more pics in the 'S&T' when I'm finished with it.
Anyway here it is. Suggestions welcome.
Wade & Butcher 7/8 Wedge with Freemason Symbols in Black Canvas Micarta.
Here is a closeup of the blade so you can see the symbols better.

Thanked: 634Not bad, but man you cheated. You used screws not pins that need pinning. Just teasing. They look real good. Nice job! Sorry I am not a fan of that type of scale material.

Thanked: 315Yeah, I'll probably use pins once I get everything the way I want it.
Pins aren't very good for test fitting! JK
Yeah, there seem to be some members that really don't like micarta/g10 (or modern materials in general). I was originally going to make the scales with black horn.
I thought the micarta was G10 when I bought it and I would be able to get it solid black (closer to the look of the original scales). I was short on cash and I could get several sets of scales out of a $5 slab vs horn which would cost about $10 a set. Also, it is a lot more durable.
I was disappointed I couldn't get them solid black, but the look it growing on me.
I may rescale them again down the line, but for now I'll stick with the micarta.

Here is a re-scale I have just done in black micarta. Oiled and buffet micarta comes up well.

Thanked: 315Those look great. I was considering using aniline dye myself.
I have a few questions if you don't mind.
What grit did you sand them to and what did you oil them with? Does it feel like it leaves on your skin when you handle them?
Is the wedge micarta too? What is that color called?

You already have some ideas on how to polish the scales but if you want to tighten the pivot hole, try a piece of cotton bud tube cut flush to the sides of the tang.
My service is good, fast and cheap. Select any two and discount the third.

Sorry I didn't get back sooner been offline. I roughed out the basic shape then soaked in Danish oil. I then go through the grits 300, 600, 1200 , 2000, then buff with plastic polish compound which is also good on g10 and horn. The spaced is hunter orange G10. Hope that helps👍
