Oh those look like some bad ones. I've seen those mostly small, but I got a batch of factory rejects that had long cracks like that on every blade. Also the same on those klas tornblom blades I have.
Asked a smith friend of mine, said that the stress cracks won't happen unless there was a problem that occurred when the original metal was poured.. in a way it did not bond together. I did not fully understand.
As long as the cracks are not dividing the load baring structure, so to speak, it should be fine... if it doesn't go all the way through.
BUT it's hard to trust that you won't get terribly sliced if it breaks, that though would most likely happen when honing...

Neil said those cracks are quite common. Something about cooling after forging.

Here's an old Skinner . Crack goes from the tang stamp forward, over the spine, and jets out toward the front.
Maybe they let it cool too much before striking the stamp? Yours seems to begin there as well.
Agreed, should shave fine.

Nice work Tom. Looks like you got the position right where you wanted! The wooden lift stick's a pretty good idea all on it's own, allowing lining it up etc.

TBH, I was a mess using the tape, Mike. Having that little handle was a LOT easier.

I always used the tape deal for dropping delicate things on things and so the technique just kind of clicked for me. Sort of like my hands and the tape are a mini crane system haha..
That being said, I will totally be trying the toothpick pole now cause I never thought of it before and it still keeps my fat fingers from blocking the work..
Always convinced I know best right up until someone shows me something better. Then I do know best,, again.. :rock:
