I was just going to do the same thing.
Welcome aboard DeObfuscate.
Well I see Austin beat me to it but I'll be getting my lathe here soon & I was planning on making some collars along with some other things. I was needing those slightly larger collars on a couple of older straights.
I haven't been able to do anything the last couple weeks or so because my good friend who recently bought a home seems to always need my help for something........everyday! I think he's trying to keep me away from working on straights. He told me I shouldn't get my lathe & to let my older brother have it!!!! I told him nope, not happening. My dad left it to ME. I love my friends but I will not be controlled!
I have an old lathe, Steve. I VERY seldom use it, handy sometimes? Could do without it on razor stuff, I think?
Tom, I have made a couple of shaving brushes using a forstner bit in a drill press but it would be much easier if I had my lathe & I could also make the male & female punches for making collars. I have also needed it for some other things that are not related to straights. My older brother has already gotten more than his share of things which I recently found out about plus I bet he has the old pocket knife I bought for my dad many years back which came up missing from my mothers house plus his razor is gone. He has gotten a lot of my dads things & all I got my hands on are the old pics of him from when he was in the Air Force like the one I showed not long ago. I just want what's mine! Anyway, personal possessions have nothing to do with what we are doing here so I'm done with that little bit.
Dang! Pet shop cow bone.. now that really "IS" jumping in! Get ready for the smell.. I haven't had the "drive" to try out one of those bones, read about it though.
JMO but I would strongly suggest a respirator. I know you said you have experience with woodworking, its just that when it comes to dust (bone, wood, tusk) its best to take more precautions than a simple dust mask provides.
Just my heart felt opinion, I bug my friends about it all the time! Lol
In it for the long run!!!
