The Butchered Blade

Yeah Tom, it makes me wonder now if that one awhile back was indeed an original Civil War piece or an old straight from that era that someone may have done themselves to make some money. It's possible it was real but then again, there's that question in the back of our minds..........
I hope it was real & that the seller didn't scam someone. I was smart enough to see the sellers name for future reference in case another such item comes up.
It was a John Barber with Ivory scales & had LT. James Curley on it with 1861 AD inscribed on it. I have pics of it.

I found the snap on picks to big, and handles to small to control comfortably while picking, poking and scribing. That's why I made my own with palm sized handles out of tunsten tig welding electrodes and s.s..
Made a 1/16, and 3/8th pointer, a 3/32 and a 5/64 angled blade as well. Also made one with a burnished end to scrape out crevices and channels.
Really fine examples of the technique Tom. :tu
I am no artist, and can say pretty confidently that mine will be works of transfers and replica's. Maybe I could do a badazz 'kilroy was here' brush logo, or a cat walking away, but that's about it.

Yeah, I have those picks in my toolbox from when I was working but they came in handy for what I did use them for. That's why I said I could also make some. Thanks B52, I won't even bother to get them out unless I need them & I will be needing them soon on my Harley.
What do you mean you're no artist? We're all artists in this butchered blade thing. I really love the way that one came out!

Gonna turn out nice! A cheap water-based light brown marker around the details and then rubbed good makes for an awesome look on those! If you love it, hold it out far and mist it with clear. If not, wash it off!

I dunno. The strokes are quite crude under magnification. I was able to restore some places where I had worn it thin (by sanding) by using a heavier sewing needle to scratch it, hitting a bit at a time with a fine sharpie and quickly rubbing it off. Paper towel, thumbs, etc.

Mike did you not say that you are working crazy hours at the boat show, and still getting nice production. Wow you are a machine.

I think the boat show is a big party. A buddy down here had a 10 year-old tunnel boat which could run almost 60 MPH with a 5 year old motor using 2 inches of water. Crazy GPS guided trolling motor.
Went to the show. Spent 60k on a new one and is confident upon getting 20 for the old one.
