The Butchered Blade

Well, got this thing unpinned finally. Drilled the pin and pulled it and still could not get the thing apart.
Whoever pinned it used a solid brass tube through everything with a pin in the middle. Finally got it apart to see the other scale was cracked to the pivot hole as well.

This blade is pretty nice, so I will use the other as there is no need in shortening a good blade.
Ain't no way I am unpinning the bottom, so I will have to somehow try to replicate the bottom pins on the top.

Is it still a 1/16th hole.
Just don't understand the tube?

I have pinned a straight with a piece of 3/32" tubing in it, then using the normal pinning material. The collars covered it up. It was actually pinned with a thicker 3/32" pin & this was in my early stages of straight razor work. I had also done it once on a straight that had the pin holes worn out too big on the scales. I drilled them to 3/32" & it worked out well.

No Tom, it wasn't me but I have been thinking about this & maybe the holes in the scales were oversized.

Oversized holes in the scales, makes sense to me if your reusing the scales.

Yep, I only ran into it once or twice but it is a fix for oversized holes in scales. I don't know if anyone has ever done it before but I have. I figured the next time I have to do one, I would blog it. Even if you make some scales & accidentally the holes don't match on one end, you could pin one end & slowly drill out the holes bigger to 3/32" to match & use a 1/16" pin. The small collars even cover the tubing up. That is only if you ever run into an issue like that, especially some old, vintage scales. When I make scales though, the pin holes are always on the money since I use the double sticky tape to hold them together.

Might be they knew what they were doing. The underside of these stag scales is quite frightening. Looks like cracks ready to happen any time, esp as-pinning. Good candidates for liners.
I have shortened them a bit past the pin-holes and am slathering CA up and down the insides with a toothpick. Figure to use some of Babur's 'pop-rivet' collars to set on some thicker spacers and set the tops a bit proud and CA them in as well. Lots of peening on annealed pins to mushroom them over the collars and try to match the bottoms as best I can.
One of those deals where if I can get it pinned, it will be ok. IF I can get it pinned without breaking them, that is!
The notch is gone from the blade and a tad more. Had to set the tip straighter down than I like to, but it has to fit.

Nice scale material Tom. Stag antler looks awesome and gnarly. Brittle too, so the CA is probably prudent.
