I've read somewhere here on SRP that you can soak bone and horn in neats foot oil. I tried just rubbing some (I didn't want to take them apart) on a couple of my razors with bone scales and it cleaned them up a little which made them shine a little more and left them feeling a lot better. It seems the neats foot oil replaces some of the natural oil/moisture in bone and horn thus leaving them less brittle.

I'm glad it is better than you thought. Looking forward to the pictures. Light mineral oil may moisturize it faster.

Roger, I have two vintage razors with bone scales that are terribly thin. I think you will find them to be stronger than you think. I have left mine as is, except for a light rub with mineral oil to replace some moisture and elasticity.

I only use Ren wax on bone works fine
oils can make them look plastic like if soaked
    Saved,
    to shave another day.
