A question for the pro's
Both of these razors are suppose to be bone scales. My question is what can I use to make the scales less brittle. I probably will rremove the blade on the congrieves to clean and polish the blade the joseph & son may not need it. I have removed the pins and replaced them on several horn but never a bone set. any suggestions. Thanks

Thanked: 4828I did a G10 liner on this old set of bone scales. They were very thin and very fragile. After I got everything cleaned up I epoxied the bone to the G10. Most of the time I go with a simple prayer before I pin old bone or old ivory. If I am going collarless I will chamfer the hole a little to give it some taper and room to expand. I did read a tutorial by sharptonn once where he was annealing the pins. http://straightrazorpalace.com/works...le-halves.html It is an exceptional read with all the bells and whistles.

Thanks. the read by Sharptonn was good. I have a broken bone scale from a previous razor I have thought about soaking in polydent overnight to see if it will harm it and at the same time clean it up and bring it back to the color it should be. the yellow scales are suppose to be bone but I've not seen yellow bone. anyway thanks.

Thanked: 4828That i a good idea with the polident. I have used a toothbrush and toothpaste to clean them with limited success but is you presoak in polident I can envision it being a step further. I look forward to seeing your results.

I got the joseph Rodgers today and it is bone. very thin. the blade looks like it has never seen a hone. cleaned up really nice. It took only minutes to clean and buff the blade now I start to clean the scales. hope I don't find anything under the stain that throws kink in the works.

On this one as far as cleaning it up the pins stay in. the blade has really no stains or rust. just a small amount of crud which cleaned up with a good soap and water tooth brush and this time I used Polly dent overnight denture cleaning stuff. I didn't leave them in the solution but used the tooth brush and pipe cleaners and the scales cleaned up pretty good. knowing how brittle the bone is what I was what to use on them to make them less brittle. mineral oil or maybe some kind of wax. I really don't know I've never played with bone scales before. I really do like the looks and feel of the scales but if they do break I can always put horn on the blade. Hope this doesn't happen.
