I can see why G10 would trash tools, but is linen that abrasive? No wonder it works so well for strops.

It's just cotton, right? Shouldn't be that bad I would think.

If it is real linen it is flax fiber. It has a much higher silicon content than cotton which is part of what makes it rot resistant. Flax linen is what the Egyptians used to wrap mummies.

A good experiment turned out, waiting for the finished product.

This has me excited.....




It actually turned quite well, very surprising. Although the edge of my roughing gouge, by the time I reached perfect round without anymore flat spots, the edge on my tool was gone. Definitely easier to turn than some of the hard TruStone, without a doubt.

I turned it from a complete square, without knocking any of the edges down to make it a octagon (makes it easier to get round.)



And proof that it was cutting.




I think this project will end well..... I hope.

1st: Starting with a block of unknown 'quality'/two glued back into being one.
2nd: Then not taking the corners off making it easier to turn without adding any additional 'stress' on the block.

I know I get a little excited sometimes and can't wait. That epoxy I used to adhere the two pieces is some of the best epoxy on the market. I had no fear of it letting go. Not knocking the corners off was just me getting home from work, running to the basement, saying "be right back in a second honey," throwing it on the lathe and getting to it.

It looks like your experiment is vey successful. It's always fun to reach to the outer edge and sometimes beyond our comfort zone. It is how we expand our skills and knowledge. For me there is nothing like getting my hands dirty to learn new things. This thread makes me smile.
