Thread: Pet store wedges?

So I recently heard that you can purchase cow bone at the pet store, so I recently heard that you can get wedges at the pet store so I went down to the local petco and grabbed some of the material. The cow bone I got was some natural, sterilized white cow bone that appears to be a femur but I'm not certain... I also got some antler, I thought it was elk or something but it says moose? Lol but I got some pictures, both sets appear to be very hard more so the antler, hard enough to chew though my band saw blade so I gotta find out the best way to cut this as well... i gotta find someone who has experience In using chew toys for wedges hahaha it's so weird to say lol

its funny after getting home I just read that it's supposed be a knuckle not the femur, I dunno let me know guys before I start cutting into this

I made a set of bone scales out of a beef bone very similar to that. Worked very well. Be prepared that it's going to be very hard stuff, and very stinky. My belt sander worked over time to get them shaped. The antler is also a great idea.

Also I think that only a Moose's Antler would be able to provide a piece that thick and large. I have a source here locally for Reindeer Antler but I've yet to see about getting any.

I have thought about doing this several times! I have to go to petco later anyways so I think I will see what they have.

Yeah I had to dig around then store and ask a few workers to find the piece I did, because all of the ones that I found had some sort of filling in it and were a bit smaller. I seriously did not want to have to deal with some peanut butter inside the bone on top of everything else hahaha so after some wondering around the employee found the piece I have and right next to it was the moose horn, flat moose horn non the less... After seeing the price of 49.99 there was a small deliberation that lasted seconds being that my wife wasn't present... So I sprung on the horn and went straight to the forum to confirm I had the best pieces and or right pieces for the job prior to chopping them up... Is the cow knuckle a better piece then the femur?

So it sounds like this is a very plausible thing to accomplish, So I very much anticipate seeing the finished product on this bone. I'm not too worried about the smell but my main concern is if my band saw is going to be able to cut though this. I do have 3 different types of blades which I have NO CLUE to which one does what... I'll post pictures to see if any of these will work... If the bandsaw will not work does anyone else have suggestions on how to split this bad boy down the center? Oh yeah I have a dremel but that sounds god awful lol

Band saw should work just fine. Just make sure you try and keep the bone in contact with the table directly below the blade. The irregular shape may cause it to tilt up or down, and if the contact is away from the blade area you may get a catch. Just make sure you take your time, and wear eye protection.

Im gonna try to find some from a nearest pretty store for make some scales. Tell it's more when you start to work on it.
