I've just started experimenting with making micarta. This is my third attempt, it's made from a synthetic sports training top. At the moment I couldn't really tell a good piece from a bad piece, but to my novice eye this seems to be pretty good.

Has anyone else tried using this material? (the stuff soccer shirts are made from). I like it although I've not tried to work it yet, I've got a nice red injun somewhere that I think I'll try it on.

Totally ignorant about making micarta. Do you use a two part epoxy-like resin, like when working Fiberglas?
To deobfuscate is to convert something that is difficult to un͝d̡͝e҉͞r̴͝st̨̕a͘͢n̢̛d̕̕ ̧͝
into one that is simple, understandable and straightforward.

I've been looking into making micarta lately. From what I have read its best to stick with natural fibers that will absorb the resin well. Most synthetics in sportswear are designed to wick moisture away from the body. Instead of the resin soaking in and hardening the fibers it will harden around the fibers, causing texture and strength issues. I have no personal experience though, this is just what I have read. I plan to start experimenting with papers pretty soon.

I have 3 young kids so have an abundance of fabrics do am really just playing about to learn techniques. I tried one paper batch, one denim and this. I'll try making scales and see how I get on.

I'm sure you're already aware - but just in case - make sure to use a good quality respirator when working with this.
My service is good, fast and cheap. Select any two and discount the third.

I've not had a chance to really work it yet. I cut a bit of the edge, finished it with superglue then sanded, I'm really pleased with the result so far.

Oh and no its not a rangers shirt LOL
