Thanked: 15Rubbed the snake off
I finally got some time to work on razors. I had a set of snake skin wood scales and started sanding. The wood looked like snake skin when I started. Now they are mostly smooth plain wood. Any idea how to get the scales back? Not sure I wanted jiggered wood as it seemed before. I tried water and mineral spirits to see if finish would bring it out. No luck yet.

To me (an I'm no expert) it looks like they used a combination of a dremel an a scribe to get that texture but I could be completely wrong. An as for the coloring it may have been just thicker staining in the darker areas.

Thanked: 13247Little confused
The dimpling is often called Picking or Picked you find it most often on old Bone handle pocket knives when it is called Picked -Bone, It is done with a picking Awl, or you can actually dimple the wood by using a hammer and a small Doming Punch
Snakewood is an actual type of wood I cant tell if that is Snakewood from the pics
This is a set I did 6 years ago in Snakewood so you have an idea

Thanked: 15Yep that's what I was hoping for when I bought it. Now I'm not sure what it is. I went to the site I bought if from and it's no longer listed. If memory serves it was called Indian snakewood.
Picked, I've never hear of before. I have heard of jiggered as in knife or bone handles.
I have a suspicion I've been hoodwinked. I was hoping someone had worked with it would tell me if the pattern came out with finish. So far, I'm betting it won't.
Curses to the internet!!!

Thanked: 15Contacted the seller. Originally sold as snake skin wood. They said the Indian translation "kiln dried wood from a very small snake". Hmm. Also not laminated skin.
I wonder if it could be stained to look like snake wood. We'll see where inspiration takes it. It is a very hard dense wood. It polishes well.

Thanked: 15I've decided it's bone. It seems the seller knows as little as I do. [emoji12]
