Thanked: 168I understand - It is a low speed power systtem separately driven by the gears Now is the backgear is driven with a belt or with a lever or on hand =
I have hard time finding configuration and way of attachinh my future countershaft to the lathe
As the original is missing , i am a forced to weld a frame and put the taep puleys with 2 ballbearing holders and home made axis
I will make 2 more step puleys for the motor and the end of the shaft or the axis This will be slow and fast speeds
Not that i will need a fast one anyway - i will make them closer ratios to have 2 diferet opions that drive the 4 diferent speeds also
If someone have proposition for a place to conest the countershaft frame to the lathe bed or the uper part - im listening

A pin on the gear closest to the chuck en is pulled to free it from the pulleys on the spindle shaft. Then the gears on the back gear shaft are pulled into contact with the gears on the spindle. That done, the original belts on the original pulleys drives the back gear by; first the small gear on the spindle shaft, that small gear on the shaft is driving the large gear on the back gear shaft. That large gear on the back shaft rotates the small gear which now drives the spindle which had been disconnected by pulling the pin from the big gear on the spindle shaft which was formerly driven by the pulley system.
To reset, pull the back gear out of mesh. Then slowly rotate the spindle by hand while pushing on the pin in the big spindle gear.. When it is seated, you are back to full speed.

I think I know what you are talking about Richard. The lathe I used had a button on a gear I believe not far from the chuck. I remember lifting the cover where the leather belt is which is where that button was. When pulled out, it geared the lathe down a lot slower, probably for cutting threads. It is my lathe I need to get over here from my mothers house. It was originally in my dads shop & I played around on it a lot when I wasn't on a customer job.
