Default Carved/pressed horn scales & neatsfoot oil soaks

Will soaking carved/pressed horn scales in neatsfoot oil present any dangers/concerns for the pressing/carving?

I never had a problem. Just keep an eye on it. If you don't want to let them soak keep rubbing in small amounts with your finger.

    Great timing

I just tossed a set in the oil bath on Sat morning, read this and went and pulled them out..

I sanded them with 220 g before dunking them to let the oil penetrate more
90% of the warping that was present is gone now the horn is very smooth which tells me that the horn swelled a bit and got rid of the 220 g marks already

I have left them for a full week without ill effects, after that you are in uncharted territory IME

This set was simple formed scales but yes I have done the same with Pressed Carved and Lettered Horn without ill effects

Check them every 12 hours and see where you are at even better take a series of pics every 12 hours and let us all see how it goes

Ok, so I probably won't throw them in an oil bath right before leaving on an 8 day holiday......
