Default Need advice on restoration of my Grandfathers Dubl Duck.

I have my Grandfathers Dubl Duck that I'd like to restore for my future use. The scales are cracked off on both sides just below the hinge pin.
Is there any way to repair this or if new scales are used, is it possible for the inlay and logo work to be transferred to a new set of scales? There is also some residual glue left from his repair. My Granpa was a working man, not a collector and used his razor daily until till it cracked on him.

    Any advice appreciated,

    Thanks,

    PE

    Welcome from SE Washington State,

Having an heirloom razor is something that many, many here would love to have and it deserves special care.

Understanding your questions tells me that you are very new to this age old art. So I Highly Recommend that you let a Pro take a look at your grandfather's razor.

PM me and I'll give you the link to a really good one/one that I can personally vouch for and has done work for me many times in the past including my great grandfather's W&B.

    Again,

    Welcome

Pictures would help people answer your questions about fixing the scales.

Here are a couple of guides on Dubl Duck restorations that show detailed scale work.

    Thanks Gent's,
Yes, I am totally "green" to straight razor shaving. Just signed on to SRP. Just that my Dad bestowed these two heirlooms to me very recently.

    I'll add pics here shortly.

Cudarunner, I just PM'd you as well.

My Grampa's razor is a "Lifetime Reaper" as well. His other razor is a "UTICA - RED SUN".

    Appreciate the assistance,

    Patrick

Yeah, I do plan on shaving with my Gramps' razor once restored.
This is all new to me but the nostalgia of putting to use something my Grandpa used daily seems really worth learning to do. Just seems like the right direction to go from here. Figure, I'll be thinking about my Gramps every time I shave.

Any recommendations for a good website or two for pointers for beginners working towards properly shaving with a straight razor?

There are a few examples of different material that can be used in your restore on here too. The scales on the ducks are prone to cell rot (NOT GOOD) and can be replaced with either wood or acrylic.

A Lifetime Duck is the GRAND PRIZE of all the ducks!
You are a LUCKY man to have an heirloom like this.

As for a place to learn to shave...YEP YOU ARE HERE!!!!
You can check the library for tips..

Straight Razor Place itself is a wonderful resource for learning to shave with a straight. Here is a link to the Beginner's Guide.

You can also read the Shaving with Straights thread in the forum. Feel free to ask questions!

Youtube is another good resoruce. Lynn Abrams has a wonderful series of videos ranging from lathering to stropping to shaving to honing.
