What is the "geometry" issues? Can they be solved without grinding machines?
Is one brand any better than others? I assume avoid anything from Packistan or looks like it's made for gas station sales.
    Any other tips?

    Thanks

Based upon your opening post, if your looking to "modify" a razor into something other than good shave ready instrument with inherent value; then get the Gold Dollar and mod away.

    But,,,,

If you are looking into learning how to restore razors, then start at the bottom of the difficulty chart and move up. Choose a vintage razor that has minor cosmetic issues, such as stained scales, blade rust or pitting, cracked scales or just a chipped edge. Fix those issues with the help of the resources here on SRP. You end up with a nice looking shaver and satisfaction in your efforts.

Then grab a broken toe vintage & make a shorty. Replace some scales with aftermarket scales or make some yourself.

What's great about this journey is choice. Your can walk it with Phyllis Diller or Raquel Welch.

I have about 5 restores under my belt. I'm looking change the profile to an aggressive French point and try some spine carving.

The G.D. is hard! I did a custom job on one myself and it turned out to be a good looking razor. So if you want to do this with a G.D., go for it. But I think the next time I do a custom job I will be finding a near wedge in bad shape or broken and play with it. Have fun. Enjoy the process. Learn and be sure to post pics of the steps as you go. Its fun but please be careful over anything else!

Lots of post and videos on modding Gold Dollars, and even some that look very nice and shave well. But you will not find them here.

Never under stood the Anti Gold Dollar bias. If it shaves, who cares? The complaint has been that they are not for new guys, because they need work to make them shave.

You are going in with your eyes wide open, and “Plan” to start by modifying a Gold Dollar.

They are hard and spine work will have to be done with a grinder.

Buy a handful, the standard Gold Dollar or the sholderless one, and have a ball, a Google search revealed (About 581,000 results, (in 1.04 seconds), and for videos, (About 88,300 results (in 0.50 seconds).

SOLD! PM me for my paypal account. ha.

Its a much better looking G.D. is all it is. Still shaves well and the cutting edge is only 2.5 inches. Lots of things can be done with the G.D. as long as you understand what your doing and know it has to be fixed to start with.

Then go with the GD or ZY at least you know it will shave when your done. The others probably not take a shaving edge. Good luck.

Just one comment to razor modifiers:
If it gets to a color, while grinding, anywhere darker than gold; you may have lost the temper of the blade and it may be very soft in that area. Work up to changes slowly and keep the blade cool!
