    Default Gold Dollar

I'm thinking of trying my hand at modding a GD or xy or there is one on the bay with "master" etched on the blade.
What is the "geometry" issues? Can they be solved without grinding machines?
Is one brand any better than others? I assume avoid anything from Packistan or looks like it's made for gas station sales.
    Any other tips?

    Thanks

I believe ZY has no stabilizers, so get one of those. With GDs the stabilized needs to be reground to be able to get the heel to contact the stones.
I doubt the steel is different, they are probably all made in the same factory.

You can make the required blade modifications using a Dremel or similar tool. However, I do not recommend holding the razor in one and and the Dremel in the other; it is too easy to lose control of one or the other. I suggest mounting the blade in a vice, padding the jaws so you do not scar the blade. Then hold the tool in both hands so you can control it. If you plan to replace the scales, you might want to remove the old scales first.

Don't buy the Master. It's a RSO. I don't think it will take an edge you could shave with.

Gold Dollar and such are very thick, very hard steel that are ground out of square on 5 out of 6 razors.
You can get an old American or Solingen razor on ebay for $10 and have something worth using when you are done.
My father was an engineer. He used to tell me that sharpening a straight razor is like trying to build a ladder to the moon out of a roll of aluminum foil.

Thanks, I've been thinking of that. Seems a shame to "destroy" a classic even if they are common and inexpensive. Might be less heartbreaking to mess with a GD.

Try to fix really hard Chinese steel and you will learn the meaning of heartbreak.

If recommend the same advice as above find a vintage razor and don't worry about destroying it. If you take your time you're gonna be just fine and have a great razor.
