Question re: when to hone when building a SR?
I am building a SR from a blade blank and new scales. I am wondering if you hone your blade before you pin your blade in the scales or after. Most of the time when I hone a blade it is already in the scales...but I am wondering if there is any advantage to honing before you pin.
Thanks, Whiz

Thanked: 3215I don’t build new razors, but on restores, I hone last, after it is scaled and pinned.
It is easier to hone and strop a scaled razor and it is dangerous to work on a honed razor. I dull the edge of every razor I work on by running a 400 grit diamond file on the edge, for safety. Haven’t cut myself,” bad” in years.
That and you run the risk of ruining your edge while pinning. The edge is very fragile.

Fendrihan sells blade blanks and replacement scales. I put one together some time ago...and it is a great little shaver. Not a bad little SR for $20.

Thanked: 13247Okay makes sense now
about 9-10 years ago there was a release of Herder Blade Blanks that do not have a final grind or HT which is why I asked
There are also some Etched "Damascus" blanks out there that have the wrong geometry to ever be a SR
Follow Eucclid's advice above

I put one of these together some time ago and it turns out to be one of my favourite daily razors...it has good heft and it has a very keen edge. It was a bugger to hone...but once I got a good edge it has been fine. I have been pleasantly surprised.
