That was a tough stain.
I took most of your advice. Polishes and toothpaste with a toothbrush cleaned it up some. I started gentle and upped the aggression. I ended up using lapping paper to sand it and the high spots lightened up.
Put it on a better blade, a Morley.

Looks good. You can also paint all the details with some proven paint and wipe the clean. It will leave paint in all the details and add a lot of depth. They look great as is too.
