That looks like a great choice.

I won't make any decisions until i make two more sets the same shape.
I have a darker green/grey buffalo horn and some Ox horn.
Let me see how they look before making a decision..

This is a piece of the Ox horn . Very hard so there will be little or no flex i think and the colours are not deep at all which will make for a textured surface.

Today i made 2 sets of scales. The reasoning was to see what i had after buying some old rare horn that i will probably not come across again.

First was the Ox horn. Really please with how this stuff operates. Machined on 80 & 120 grit, then hand sanded with 600/1500/2500/3000 wet n dry & buffed with a white polishing compound. Black to yellow colouring.

Second up was Buffalo Horn labeled as Grey/Green. The end result was very nice. A translucent amber/brown with streaks.

I am curious about the method you used to shape the horn into scales. Power tools? Scroll saw?

I would like to try shaping horn into scales and think the use of power tools might send some nasty dust into the air whereas hand tools would not.

That is some nice looking horn and the scales turned out great.
For shaping horn, a sander works great, and if your dust extraction system is effective the dust won’t be an issue. A good mask is always a wise choice with any dust. If you shape by hand you can use a coping saw and a rasp to rough shape them and them use a scraper to get very close and finishing off with a progression of sand paper and hand polishing. Horn works very easily.

    Hi Dzec,
I cut the rough shapes with the bandsaw and then thin and shape on the grinder... Platen head to thin and wheel to shape.. I use a full face mask with filters..
